This toy is a lot of fun. http://water.weather.gov/precip/ [/quote]
It is a great resource, from what I understand it should have at least some bias adjustment from rainfall gauges, adding value to it's accuracy.
Those rains were definitely welcome for the Rio Grande basin too, won't come close to solving the problem, but will keep us from sliding backwards as fast. Especially as the ridge sets back up and we go full blast drought again.

Not much happened yesterday afternoon so short range guidance prevailed. Today is yet another forecasting pain for temps in North Texas. Clouds remain and there is a complex to the NW moving in. Again unsure if much of this will survive intact but at the very least outflows should prevent widespread 100s. In fact short range guidance are more happy about scattered showers this afternoon for the I-20 corridor than yesterday.
Overall it looks like DFW may escape July with only a few 100+ readings (remember 2011 when essentially every day of the month was 100+?). Right now the airport is running about -1.1F below normal for the month and Houston is -0.7F. Austin is running +0.6F above normal and San Antonio is +0.9F, sorry guys it is what it is (though areas around these two cities many are below average, must be that omega bubble). These values won't likely to change too much with a week left for the month.

Re: Texas Summer - 2013
Did someone order rain in Collin County? It's been going all morning. Very nice.

I had some light rain most of the morning, but it's clearing out now and partly cloudy. Didn't get much rain, less than 0.25 inch but good for lawn watering.
I noticed the GFS/Euro is going for heat ridge to come out from the west. This is typical climo that the first week of August is the usually the apex for hottest raw temperatures of the year. I still think the core heat will remain in the inter-mountain west and we'll see upper 90s and low 100s for a couple of days to start out the month marking the height of summer. After the first week and a half climo starts going down and we'll notice it first in lows as they trend downwards.
I still believe summer will end early this year and not unlike last year when second half of August featured cloudy, cooler days. CFSv2 and Euro weeklies actually shows a surge of much below normal temperatures coming down the plains after the first week (after August 5th), this similar to early June and July both featuring a period of unusually cool weather. The upper Midwest is already seeing September like cold fronts so it's only a matter of time.

A convective storm from the attending cold front dropped about a quarter inch of rain this afternoon over me so just a little over 0.45 inches for the day. Most of the storms are along I-20 in Dallas and Tarrant and moving east/southeast. Some isolated ones along I-30 in Rockwall and Collin counties.
upper 60s for lows tonight (low 70s in the immediate urban areas) will feel pleasant with drier air after the recent lows in the 80s and upper 70s.

Got about .38 inches of rain here at the PWC in scenic southwest Austin/Travis County. I noticed the rainfall amounts were heavier from north central Austin up to Pflugerville and down the east side of I-35. Lots of lightning though. Wish I would have taken some photos. Been a while since I've seen so much lightning.

Re: Texas Summer - 2013
Coushatta, LA is off to our East about 150 miles. They got a lot more rain than we did in SE TX. I only got 0.05" from the am rains. Already up to 91f, which is admittedly cooler than the 101f high we had yesterday. We should be drying out and heating up even more after the "front" drifts off the coast. Rain and cooler would be very nice!! I've had just over 2" of rain so far this month while others to my NW in the metro area have had over 5".

I'm actually out of town the whole week (until next Friday), so I don't know if we got rain or not(?). I know the closest WU station to us got 0.65 inches. I'll check when I get back.

Long range models (CFSv2/Euro weeklies and now the OP Euro hinting) continues to show an anomalous surge of well below normal temperatures coming down the plains from Canada beyond August 5th which is about 2 weeks off. Big great lakes low carving a deep trough east of the divide.

Hey, that is great news as I'll be up in the Great Lakes area on vacation Aug. 5-12. I wouldn't mind seeing some 60-70 degree temps.

Re: Texas Summer - 2013
Another thought as I'm sitting down with the laptop after my Saturday walk of a mile and a half ... this is July 27th and I'm walking with temps in the upper 80s and a crystal blue sky with fair weather cumulus. On July 27th??!!
I would expect this in early May or maybe late September.
Two fronts reaching south central Texas in July. What an amazingly different summer this has been for us.

It has been amazing. I spent some time today playing tennis and the dry air along with cooler temperatures felt great...in July! It is truly the summer of cold fronts. If every summer was like this heat would be much more tolerable knowing some relief every now and then is in the offing. One of the best summers for sure. I've forgotten what a real heat wave is like

For fun here is this year's anomaly so far. One of the rare cooler years since 2000.

The weekly outlook for DFW sure looks HOT!!!! We have been blessed so far this summer. The hottest part of the year is upon us and it looks like we are all in for it for the next seven days. I was hoping we could go all summer without a nasty stretch of 100's. September is a month away and then talk of stronger cold fronts will not be far behind. Hold on, autumn is not far off!

I keep seeing all of you guys talking about how pleasantly cooler than usual the weather has been in SE TX and the hill country and north texas...while I'm still down here in Corpus Christi roasting. Ugh, it sure would be nice for a frontal boundary to actually get down here. :p

A frontal boundary in Corpus in July?! C'mon man ... that's asking for a miracle!

There's no doubt that South Texas has not been able to enjoy this moderately unusual summer. Our friend rgv20 reminded us of this as well. Let's hope that the westerlies may their presence known early this year and we get a big front early in September.
But hey, the good news is that you're in Corpus ... IMO, one of the best towns in Texas! I love it there.
