HRRR 15hrs out : http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/HRRR/displ ... ll&adtfn=1

Check out the area between OKC & Amarillo in NW & west central Oklahoma  that is going to be a bullseye for some heavy snowfall rates of 2-3 inches per hour..

00Z Euro has 55mm liquid in NW Oklahoma, or over 2" liquid. At 10:1, that's nearly 2 feet of snow in NW Oklahoma today. Nothing as far southeast as Dallas/Ft. Worth. Looks like little or no rain for Portastorm overnight.

Just 4 more days to March and we can put all this talk of winter behind us (except for all the snow to our north and Euro forecast of cold air moving down...).

Come on wxman57, give us winter lovers our last few remaining days of cool air. We've been good this year. True, March is near and the warm up begins soon. It is then you can have the rest of the year to have your fun. Until October anyway. Until then the weather is ours!!!!! :D

Just watched an Oscar recap on the Weather Channel. In between reports of Winter Storm "Rocky". Give me a break. The Weather Channel is still informative and great with reporting but jeez, what the hey? In the world of 24 hour programming that is a lot of hours to fill.

Wow, imagine this, another "strong" "dynamic" "historic" system plowing through and what do we get? nothing.

But go to far eastern Texas and Louisiana, they get the rain, thunderstorms, everything.

I bet the guys laying the new pipeline along Hwy 78 in Wylie/Lavon are happy there's no heavy rain. For over a week they've been pumping water out of the "river" that leads from the Lavon Dam into Ray Hubbard. Any heavy rain could cause them delays, and we need that pipeline done to bring the raw water from Lake Texoma directly into the North Texas Municipal Water District's treatment plant.

It's dead for allowing it to flow into Lake Lavon. The NTMWD is building this pipeline to bring raw water directly to the treatment plant. This way we still get the Texoma water, but don't pollute Lavon with them. But look for our water rates to increase due to this $300 million effort. You can read about it here: https://ntmwd.com/texoma_extension.html

Nope, they are going to pump Texoma directly to treatment plant and bypass Lake Lavon altogether. So I guess that last pipeline from Texoma to Lavon can pump fresh water now and become the first billion dollar tube ride, downside I guess is once you got on there would be no getting off till you dropped into the mud on the north end of lavon.

Very impressive blizzard going on in the Panhandle today. The all time 24 hr Texas snowfall record might even fall:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AMARILLO TX
833 AM CST MON FEB 25 2013

...CRIPPLING BLIZZARD ROARS ON...

.UPDATE...

GOING FORECAST STILL ON TRACK. THE NWS OFFICE NOW HAS OVER 13 INCHES
ON THE GROUND WITH 3-4 FOOT DRIFTS AND A MAX GUST TO 58 MPH. THE SE
TX PANHANDLE HAS BEEN SLOW TO FILL IN WITH SNOW AFTER THE
THUNDERSTORMS THAT DROPPED HEAVY RAIN LAST NIGHT AND THESE AREAS
MIGHT END UP WITH AMOUNTS CLOSER TO THE 8 INCH SIDE THAN THE 14 INCH
SIDE OF THEIR RANGE. AT THE END OF THE DAY...THE HEAVIEST TOTALS
WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY BE ALONG A PALO DURO CANYON TO AMARILLO TO
STINNETT TO PERRYTON LINE.

SOME RECORDS SEEM TO BE IN A PRECARIOUS POSITION TODAY. THE FIRST IS
AN ALL-TIME 24 HOUR SNOWFALL RECORD AT AMARILLO OF 20.6 INCHES FROM
MARCH 25-26 1934. WE WILL LIKELY GET VERY CLOSE OR SURPASS THIS
NUMBER BY THIS AFTERNOON.

THE OTHER IS THE ALL-TIME STATE OF TEXAS 24 HOUR SNOWFALL RECORD OF
25 INCHES IN FOLLETT SET MARCH 28 2009. SOMEWHERE IN THE
PERRYTON/STINNETT/BORGER/AMARILLO AREA COULD APPROACH THIS VALUE BY
THIS AFTERNOON.

My son at Tech has been sending me some great photos and videos from Lubbock, where they are getting quite the snowstorm. Some "whiteout" conditions as well. Ah ... at least someone in Texas is getting winter weather.

Meanwhile, the desertification of Austin continues. Another fropa, another dry fropa.

Portastorm, there were some storms headed your way at 2 am. It appears they fizzled out. Crazy wind here in Del Rio right now.

Hmm getting there DFW NWSFO
THERE IS SOME CONCERN AS TO HOW FAR SOUTH THE PRECIP WILL PERSIST
AS THE UPPER LOW MOVES NORTHEAST THROUGH TONIGHT. IT APPEARS THAT
SOME FRONTOGENETIC FORCING WILL PERSIST ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE
LOW AS IT CROSSES NORTH TEXAS THROUGH LATE TONIGHT. MODEL GUIDANCE
DOESNT SUGGEST THAT THIS WILL BE SUFFICIENT TO PRODUCE HEAVY
AMOUNTS OF PRECIPITATION BUT OFTEN TIMES THAT GUIDANCE CAN
SIGNIFICANTLY UNDER ESTIMATE THIS SMALLER SCALE FORCING. THERMAL
PROFILES ARE SUFFICIENTLY COLD TO SUPPORT SNOW...ALTHOUGH SURFACE
TEMPERATURES ARE SEVERAL DEGREES ABOVE FREEZING. THE CONCERN IS
THAT CONDITIONS COULD DETERIORATE EVEN IN LIGHT SNOW WITH 20 TO 30
MPH SUSTAINED WINDS. AT THIS TIME WILL HOLD OFF ON ANY WINTER WX
ADVISORY FOR THE NORTHWEST COUNTIES TO SEE IF BANDED PRECIPITATION
PERSISTS BEHIND THE LOW. IF IT APPEARS TO HOLD TOGETHER...THEN AN
ADVISORY WOULD LIKELY BE REQUIRED FOR A FEW COUNTIES TO THE
NORTHWEST OF THE METROPLEX. ACCUMULATIONS WOULD BE LIGHT...IF ANY
...GIVEN WARM SURFACE TEMPS BUT VISIBILITIES AND DRIVING
CONDITIONS COULD BE HAMPERED.

Y'all can have it. We got storm after storm roll through last night. Perfect example of training. Received about 3" in five hrs. Everything is completely saturated and more is on the doorstep.

The winds have picked up significantly here too in Austin. Just walked a block or two to Quiznos for lunch and with downtown buildings and such we have a massive wind tunnel effect. Some local reports of gusts to 40 mph. Sustained northwest winds now around 20 with multiple higher gusts.

If any fires do start today, they'll spread so quickly it'll be scary.
