As some of you know, I'm in my late 40s now. Growing up many families had gardens. Even in suburbia. Some set up curb-side tables to sell tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, etc. And sitting nearby was an old cigar box, with change to start the new day's business. Rarely did you encounter the gardener/farmer. You just were expected to put in the amount owed. It was the honest thing to do! Today I've only encountered one such honor system box in my area. And the farmer is in his 70s. One by one as that generation fades away, I have to wonder if we'll have curb-side stands in years to come. Sure hope so. I do see them in the country. But I'm talking about suburbia. Sort of sad if you ask me!
Care to share your memories? My daughters are always amazed at this honor system thing - someone could just take all the money and run, they say! I counter back by saying - oh no, that is not how it works! That would be just awful......
