In my opinion, the NWS did an amazing job with Hurricane Irene - and I would hate to see it lose it's funding. However, I do think that this storm is proof that another form of categorizing storms needs to be considered. Those that wrote off Irene because she was only a Category I are now seeing the devastation that floods and surge can cause.
Do we need a national weather service?

I saw the "Fox News" and didn't even click it. An absolutely stupid and irresponsible thing to say.

Macrocane wrote::eek: What country doesn't need a NWS? I started reading that and couldn't go on, the guy who wrote it has to solve some personal issues IMO.
Yeah, unless the public thinks they can spot a rain-wrapped tornado better than the NWS I suggest they be quiet.

This is not the first time that there have been calls from the political right to do away with what we now know as the National Weather Service.
In 2005 Presidential candidate, then Senator from Pennsylvania; Rick Santorum introduced The National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005 to clarify the duties and responsibilities of NOAA. If enacted, the legislation would prohibit the NWS from publishing weather date to the public when private-sector entities such as AccuWeather, A COMPANY BASED IN SANTORUM'S HOME STATE; performed the same function commercially.
The bill was never enacted or voted upon, dying in committee.
Y'all can read into the politics of Mr. Santorum, the authors of the article and the media outlet that published the article as you wish.........
