Do we need a national weather service?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Do we need a national weather service?

Saw this posted under the Opinion link on foxnews website.

In my opinion, the NWS did an amazing job with Hurricane Irene - and I would hate to see it lose it's funding. However, I do think that this storm is proof that another form of categorizing storms needs to be considered. Those that wrote off Irene because she was only a Category I are now seeing the devastation that floods and surge can cause.

Meh. People are idiots. They don't realize how many lives they save every year.

Yes, we need the NWS. We will always need the NWS. The NWS is vital to our country.

I saw the "Fox News" and didn't even click it. An absolutely stupid and irresponsible thing to say.

 What country doesn't need a NWS? I started reading that and couldn't go on, the guy who wrote it has to solve some personal issues IMO.

Yeah, unless the public thinks they can spot a rain-wrapped tornado better than the NWS I suggest they be quiet.

I bet Iain Murray and David Bier can be bang up meteorologists right now. I mean, how hard can it be? Sheesh. They are touting Accuweather....( I am totally joking....)

This is not the first time that there have been calls from the political right to do away with what we now know as the National Weather Service.

In 2005 Presidential candidate, then Senator from Pennsylvania; Rick Santorum introduced The National Weather Service Duties Act of 2005 to clarify the duties and responsibilities of NOAA. If enacted, the legislation would prohibit the NWS from publishing weather date to the public when private-sector entities such as AccuWeather, A COMPANY BASED IN SANTORUM'S HOME STATE; performed the same function commercially.
The bill was never enacted or voted upon, dying in committee.

Y'all can read into the politics of Mr. Santorum, the authors of the article and the media outlet that published the article as you wish.........
