I have never in my lifetime seen a storm that looks better developed over land.... Irene is a crazy... !@#$@#

What storm was it a few years ago that still had a clearly defined eye when it hit Oklahoma? Was that Rita?

The 5 pm projected path has Irene making landfall between Ocean City, NJ and Atlantic City, NJ, followed by another landfall in Queens County (and then going right over JFK).

How sturdy is JFK airport? Most airports have all those glass windows so everyone can see out. That sounds like it could be really bad. And blown out windows at an airport and all that glass will probably slow down air traffic for awhile until it gets cleaned up. Ugh.

In downtown Houston in Ike when the windows were blown out of the skyscrapers, those were primarily buildings used for businesses and not residences. Not too many people actually live in downtown Houston (a few converted lofts and hotels, but not that many and most aren't too tall). That's not the case in NYC as many people live in taller buildings. I hope those people are taking precautions.

Looks like the eye will be over or scrape the Jersey coast as Irene heads north. That's what y'all seeing too?

so what exactly is going on with the southern side?

I've been watching TCs come into the northeast from the Carolinas for a long time. They always transition into this configuration as they come abreast of Maryland/Delaware. The convection south of the eye virtually disappears. You wind up with a ball of clouds/heavy convection with the eye sitting at the center bottom. All of the precip shifts to the western side, with a small amount also to the due north and virtually none on the east and south sides of the circulation. Irene is clearly transitioning to that shape. What it means for locations in the path is that after the eye passes you get very strong wind but it's accompanied by abruptly clearing skies. And locations to the right of the eye get MUCH less precip.

92kts FL is normally right at the threshold for cat 2. This is by no means a weak storm. I'm very interested in how the NYC high rises windows hold up.
