I may be wrong, but I seem to notice a minor easterly jog as eyes interact with a land mass. It doesn't usually amount to a lot at two or three hour intervals, but it seems somewhat consistent.

Irene is re-doing the exterior of my house. Apparently, she doesn't like rain gutters because she just ripped them off.

Mark Sudduth is currently south of Nags Head, NC...his live shot shows the water of Roanoke Sound being pushed away from the shore...it's all mud as of right now.

He's got some great footage ongoing.

Good MDL website with a nice clickable map for tide/surge info across the northeast:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/etsurge/ind ... &region=ne

Surge values may be a bit low in spots, compared to NHC forecasts, which, by the way, are available here:
ftp://ftp.nhc.noaa.gov/surge/Latest/

There are static and animated deterministic Irene surge forecasts on that page.

This is pretty concerning, because they'er in for quite a few more hours of onshore wind and the tide is now on the rise.
