WRAL-TV (Raleigh), my old employer, has the best NC hurricane info/news. No, of course I'm not biased :D

http://www.wral.com/

Lists evacuation routes, among other things.

NC Impact

#10 Postby Tommedic » Thu Aug 25, 2011 2:30 pm

I know many are interested in historic issues of Irene and possible event in NY, NJ, and New England. However, within the next 48 hours, Irene will be impacting NC, possibly NE SC, and Virginia. I am extremely interested in any west shift as I have family in Cape Fear and if it will be direct impact, I will be required to work versus up to now being able to stay home this time. Maybe if we could break down discussions to areas potentially to be impacted. Just a thought.

Not a lot of details coming out of our local NWS which is concerning because they are ground zero for the NHC track. Not sure why they aren't doing more to inform the public.

The official forcast from them as of 2pm today is for "winds over 80 mph east of highway 17 on saturday" which means from a jacksonville to new bern to washington line, or just inland from the coast. Otherwise, they are quiet as a mouse. Outdoing themselves today on dropping the ball.....
Hopefully RAL will step-up and post some watches/warnings for their eastern CWA and force MHX into action before it gets to be too late for people inland to prepare.

Booked a room for my wife and kids in Goldsboro, Fri. and Sat. nights. Figured that was far enough away. I am going to stay home with the two dang cats. Unfortunately, we lost our two beloved labs in the last year and a half, but I am thankful they are not with me for this. They had experienced enough storms in their lifetimes anyway.

If it looks to be really life-threatening, I'll leave with the dang cats and meet them Sat. morning. As you may have surmised, I'm not especially fond of cats. Especially these two, on is an outdoor cat, one is an indoor cat and they both can't stand each other. But I need to take them with me, cats are people too.

I don't know what more the local media can do, short of taking over the station for 24/7 warnings. I suppose it's a fine line between warning people and putting them into panic. Most people I have been in contact with are appropriately preparing though.

Who here is east of 17 that are choosing to ride it out?

Not East of 17 but I am in Greenville, I think the local folks are taking it serious even if the NWS at MHC isn't. Everyone I know is prepared. I think the state is prepared as well...friends in the National Guard are reporting at 0530 tomorrow and some other who work EM for the State have been ready and on alert since yesterday.

We have a repair garage for Craven County vehicles down the street. Driving by today, I was surprised to see they have a couple of airboats parked in the parking lot, at the ready.

We are in New Bern and are choosing to stay, at least at the moment. We've been through several storms in South Florida before moving here, so feel like we're prepared and know how to handle ourselves. We also have two furry family members so that affects our plans as well. I'm mostly concerned about flooding possibilities as we live in downtown New Bern.

As expected:

"Carteret County emergency management has issued a mandatory evacuation order for Bogue Banks beginning at 5 a.m. Thursday. The order affects all visitors and residents in the municipalities of Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, and Pine Knoll Shores.
Beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, access to these cities and Bogue Banks will be restricted to essential personnel only."

Good luck to you. If you should choose to leave, don't wait too long and be sure you can jump on I-70 without any trouble. I would bet they close the new Cunningham Bridge pretty quick.

We're now under Hurricane Warning, by the way.

I am just to the east of New Bern down by the Toyota dealership. I am staying. No large trees nearby and am on high ground plus newer home.
