Bahamas is part of the british commonwealth like Australia or Canada, but I wpuldn't say that those countries are part of the British empire.

OK got a question everybody!!! My brother and sister inlaw live in NC he is stationed at cherry point. She wants to know if Irene is a cat 3 or 4 when it passes them how far from the eye wall will hurricane force winds come out? I told her I thought it would be around 100 miles give or take but I could be wrong. And how far for tropical storm winds.

Hi, this can't be answered at the moment. If Irene goes through an eyewall replacement cycle and the eye becomes quite large then the wind radius will also increase. The need to look at the wind radius products from the NHC updated every forecast to determine that.

In all cases they should relay on the NHC and local authorities for this info.

I'm about 20 miles from cherry point. it's still too early to tell what will happen here in eastern nc. should have a better idea tomorrow. Have her watch the local news for information when they feel confident enough to start issuing it. Channel 12 and channel 8 are good sources for tv weather here.
That being said, and this is probably going to change, right now I would think that Cherry Point would get winds maybe up to 70 or so, but flooding will be more of a concern. Both heavy rainfall and surge flooding from the neuse river affect the cherry point area during these storms.
Just have them monitor the local news and do what base and civilian authorites tell them to do.
