Would This BUG You?

#1 Postby azskyman » Wed Aug 27, 2003 10:13 pm

Two mornings in a row...a neighborhood tarantula decided to guard the employee entrance to our plant. We have a little lighted alcove where employees enter each day and for whatever reason, this little (not THAT little) missy has decided to greet each one of us as we come in to work.

Well...I am no fan of spiders, but at least tarantulas are docile and slow and not normally aggressive. So we coaxed the lady to the desert yesterday with a broom.

Today, though, one of our pressmen decided he wanted to take her home and put her in his garden...to help keep the insect population under control. He breaks a clay pot in half and offers it up to tarantulas from time to time for this purpose...an equal housing opportunity!

Frankly...little missy and I would not do well in the same neighborhood, let alone the same yard. Especially since she likes to wander the "hood " after dark when I am sleeping ( or trying to).

I'm too much of Midwestern suburbanite to think that a tarantula is good company for my garden. Tarantulas belong in the desert....like about 100 miles out in the desert. Leave me alone and I'll leave you alone.

Anyone who shares a similar opinion with my pressman? Incidentally, he also has one of our 5" scorpions at home.

Hope he never invites me to a garden party by his pool.

I"m sure I will have another commitment that night. Wouldn't you?

I have had snakes and lizards, those do not bother me. But the creepy spider thing, I do not think I would deal well with.

So I am with you on this one!

Ya know.....I "HATES" spiders with a PASSION but those big furry dudes don't bother me too much as LONG AS I CAN SEE them. Growing up in Whiteriver, on the Fort Apache Rez......we use to have them as *house* mates, no kidding, we lived in government housing (we all know how THAT goes).....as long as I could SEE them, I was O'TAY, one morning, I put my house slippers on, I was 8 yrs old.......I let a scream out like you wouldn't believe, I *think* that's where my fear of spiders grew from!

I'm not a spider lover by any means (except I love splatting them); but tarantulas don't give me the creeps that black widows and brown recluse aka "fiddleback" spiders do...

Several years ago I spied a black widow crawling in under my front screen door, and I was afraid to sleep that night (even though I killed it...but was mortified at the thought it might have cousins or siblings nearby). That's the only time I've ever seen a black widow spider indoors.....and hope to the Lord it's the last (I've killed a few over the years outside...inside old pipes or under rocks).

One of my favorite high school teachers died in 1982 after being bitten by a brown recluse spider...so I'm also deathly afraid of them (will tear out the wall to kill one).

I think and believe now that animals belong in their natural habitat. So I wouldn't be in favor of him moving this tarantula away from the desert. I was so very sad viewing the penquins at our aquarium a year ago. Everyone was ooing and ahhhhing and I was ready to cry. I wanted to ship them all up north. I have a hard time enjoying myself at the Zoo too. Old age? I don't know. I'm getting very wacky in my thinking I know. But this is how I feel today.

Small spiders don't really bother me, but big ones do. About 6 years ago, I lived in a townhouse with an unfinished basement. There would OFTEN be 5 or more very large spiders crawling on the floor or walls every time I would go down there. Just thinking about it now makes my skin crawl. So I would absolutely NOT want to be anywhere near a tarantula! :o

During my senior year in HS, I got bitten on the toe by a brown recluse that found it's way into my Reebok hi-tops (since then, I've always worn socks!).

We lived in Colorado when I was a toddler and then moved to KY when I was 5. I lifted a box with some toys in it and found a dead scorpion underneath. If the weight of the box didn't kill it, that lack of warmth probably did, since KY isn't a good natural habitat for them...especially in air conditioning.

The tarantula probably wouldn't bother me. But like Perry, I'd go crazy trying to kill one of the smaller ones before it got away. Couldn't sleep well, knowing it might crawl out during the night.
