State College, PA - According to WeatherBELL Analytics Chief Meteorologist Joe Bastardi, a frenzy of named storms resulting in multiple hurricanes is about to be unleashed between Aug 25 and mid-September, and could pose a threat to the US during the time period.

Fine - keeping following JB and his disaster scenarios - I won't be one of them, and I'm sure the NHC and HRD folks would agree...

NOAA folks learned a long time ago that to make a statement like that only upsets the public over something that likely won't happen...

Are there hurricanes in September - yes - but that'd be like suggesting that someone will have a blizzard in January...

The long-term pattern so far has been anything but what he suggests, and to make a statement like that only incites the media and upsets the public...

Interesting that the media as a whole has still to pick up on his press release - TWC has made no mention of his tabloid-style prediction...

Frank, I don't always agree with you but in this case ... I couldn't agree more!

It's all about marketing and driving traffic to his new website. Based on some of the tweets lately and JB chirping about what a cheap deal it is, I'm guessing they're not getting the kind of interest they hoped for.

In comparison to this season will we have a "frenzy" of storms in the next 4-6 weeks? Probably because climatology says so! Doh!

The general media won't pick up on anything until we get some named storms threatening populated areas, namely the US mainland.

I enjoy hearing what JB has to say just as I enjoy Mark from hurricanetrack and whoever does the write up on crown weather...its were we learn by reading and listening to these wise and very educated "weather folks" If JB is saying this and it happens its not becasue he said it would but it will sure make me listen to him a little more if it dont happen then well he got it wrong. but so what hes excited about his job. I am not paying to hear what he has to say there are to many free sites and knowledgeable people out there but I do get interested when he gets all pumped up! keep up the good work on here as well we have alot of knowledgeable people here too

I understand what you are saying, but when we get excited about our job usually it doesn't mean anything to anyone else - but when a media person gets that way, it's sure to affect thousands, if not millions or more, so they need to be very careful about what they say and how the public will interpret their comments...

There was a big controversy in 1985 during Hurricane Gloria - some older members might recall that mess, and how one person's comments caused a public frenzy in New York City - though overall the outcome was far from what was feared...

As Portastorm said, perhaps JB is trying to drum up business, but it's an unfair way to do business when it comes to upsetting the public with an extreme statement like that...

I understand you..I live in coastal NC and our governor came on tv and told us to get out of Carteret County...had us all pretty shaken up. As much as I like a good storm and weather my daughter was 1 year old and my husband was a police officer on Atlantic Beach he had to work but I took my daughter and went inland to Goldsboro to my sisters house. Yes I agree sometime they get carried away...but our local weathermen are already saying they are going to keep a close eye on the system that has not even developed yet for our area between Aug 27-30

I've followed Joe B for many years now, but I only listen to him for entertainment value only!
I never take anything he says seriously. He's kinda like the Shock Jock of weatherman. His forecasts during hurricane season are very often way over the top and very dramatic, and most of the time his dramatic tropical forecasts don't pan out... With that said, he's great entertainment and I enjoy following him. He does get it right every now, but then again, even a blind man will eventually get a bullseye if he throws enough darts at the board.....

and to think...just last year I was banned from this site for a time for saying the same thing about JB...now it seems ok to bash him....We need consistancy here...is it or is it not accepted to bash?

I'm not bashing him, just telling it like it is...He knows he's dramatic and entertaining. Even his most loyal followers know that. Nothing wrong with it. It's just his style.

and his track record isn't that great when it relates to the tropics....Again, just telling it like it is.
He might be fantasic though when it comes to local weather. I've never followed him regarding that.

Another thing, when JB is over the top and dramatic like he is, it opens
himself up to much more criticism if his forecasts don't pan out. He's aware of that I"m sure.
On the flip side, JB will be the first to tell you when he's right :)...He's awesome, I love him!

I'm sorry but I'm not aware of the specific reason why you incurred discipline last year. However, as a moderator I do enforce the "no personal attacks or personal insults of professional meteorologists" rule. I do not believe we have crossed that line in this thread. But because I have participated in this thread, I will leave it up to my mod and admin colleagues to determine if your charge has merit.

Its ok...not really concerned about what has happened, or why...its not that important.....I just feel talking about people is wrong. Just keep it all about weather..thats what this site is for....maybe I am the stupid one, I dont know..

I think we can all agree JB is a bit controversial, and I don't think even he'd take offense at being called something of a showman. But hurricanedude is right that he's a professional meteorologist and we have a policy of being respectful of professionals on this site. Maybe a good test before hitting "submit" would be to consider how your words would sound if you substitute Stacey Stewart, or Neil Frank etc. for Joe Bastardi.

Thanks everybody, and carry on ...

An answer to whether or not I will be continuing. Probably not, just don't see paying the fees for what you get. For just his and the other Joe's opinions it's just not worth it IMHO.

I'll approach the line.

JB made some terrible calls last year and then quit Accuweather and now works for a small private outfit who is trying to get subscribers. He's saying the same thing this year, we are bound to get some hits, season is about to start, etc. His credibility with me based on past performance has dropped significantly. As a trained forecaster he knows it's almost impossible to predict number of hits to the US unless you can be certain of the pattern, yet he makes these claims anyway. For me, that's irresponsible.

Does he actually make forecasts on WB or is it more 'blogging the weather patterns'?

Exactly, that's why I don't buy into the "don't talk bad about him philosophy", because when you make some of the outlandish claims that JB makes, it DOES open you up to criticism, if you are way off the mark.... It comes with the territory when you make such dramatic tropical forecasts..... I'm sure that JB isn't thin skinned, and I'm sure he can handle it.....

Speaking of JB, this guy(see below link) is pretty much a hype machine too regarding what's coming up in the tropics.
