It amazes me to no end how Alex and Karl are comparable to Roxanne in damage and death toll but don't get retired.

Agreed that Alex and Karl should have been retired - they combined for almost $8 billion in damage after all! Agatha and Matthew I could understand hesitance because they were only tropical storms that impacted a relatively impoverished area, despite the severe damage. It makes me wonder how Alma was retired though?

Igor and Tomas seem like good retirement picks though. They were record storms for Newfoundland and St. Lucia, respectively.

As someone named Alex, I am pleased the name was not retired. But I can understand why, objectively, it should have been. It caused terrible flooding in the mountains of Mexico. I wonder if a hurricane whose remnants cause great damage is less likely to be retired than a hurricane that causes the same amount of damage when it is a hurricane.

Didn't realize this earlier but Tomas became only the fourth Category 2 hurricane to have its name retired. Fifi, Diana and Juan are the others.

Diana and Roxanne are good examples of storms retired for Mexican impacts. Karl and Alex are really baffling to me, along with Emily.

I agree the area was devastated and yet they want to see the names again. I'm kinda disappointed because I liked the name Igor but its for the best that Newfoundland doesn't see the name again.

The WMO should just start ignoring Mexico and everyone present should just do a majority vote to see if storms that strike that country get retired. It really is ridiculous.

Wow! I was kind of reluctant to believe that Mexico doesn't like to ask for retirement but now I do believe it. I'm amazed that Agatha was not retired Alma and not Agatha, that doesn't make sense. Anyway I agree with the retirement of igor and Tomas. By the way, are we really sure that Agatha was not retired? The news don't say anything about the Pacific.

But that would be like saying the UN Security Council ought to just start ignoring China and Russia. A good idea, but ultimately undermines the purpose of the organization.

Don't be certain Agatha will be seen again in 2016. The pacific hasn't been announced yet.

The Pacific is announced at the same time as the Atlantic, it's the same meeting. No news = no names retired.

Consider Igor and Tomas relative to their population.

Igor in Newfoundland (population 470,000 on the island) did $200 million in damage. Proportionally, the same storm in Florida (population 18,900,000) would do $8.1 billion in damage. Obviously, a storm doing $8.1B in damage would be retired from a US impact as it would rank as one of the great hurricanes. And that was from a transitioning-to-extratropical Category 1 hurricane.

Tomas in St. Lucia (population 175,000) did about $350 million in damage. Proportionally, the same storm in Florida would do a whopping $37.8 billion in damage!!! That would rank that hypothetical storm as the third costliest storm ever in the US, and from a marginal Category 2 as well.

Goes to show that even "weaker" hurricanes can be very devastating.
