RECON is flying at 963 mb, really, really low in altitude. Next time, if there's a next time for a RECON of this system, NOAA may send a boat!!

45kts probably is about right for this system at the moment, SS Otto, have to wait for what the NHC say with regards to what recon found in the core and whether its made progress towards Tropical status.

Can't rule out hurricane status down the line if it does go pure tropical.

They now forecast Otto to become a hurricane.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS RECENTLY REPORTED BY AN AIR FORCE RESERVE
RECONNAISSANCE AIRCRAFT ARE NEAR 60 MPH...95 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER
GUSTS. ADDITIONAL STRENGTHENING IS FORECAST DURING THE NEXT 48
HOURS...AND OTTO COULD TRANSITION INTO A TROPICAL STORM BY
THURSDAY...AND THEN BECOME A HURRICANE BY THURSDAY NIGHT OR
FRIDAY MORNING.

To be a hurricane it has to be tropical!

What would it be called if Otto remains subtropical with 65 kt winds? Category 1 Subtropical Storm Otto?

If it does get to 65kts as a subtropical system (which I don't think will happen), it would be a hurricane as far as I know.

Thats a good question, what would they do if a subtropical storm managed to get hurricane force sustained winds...I mean its unlikely but I've seen ExT storms have wind means damn close to hurricane sustained, so clearly under the right set-up and pressure gradient it'd be possible.

In this set-up it'd be unlikely Otto can get much stronger without turning tropical though.

I believe that like extratropical storms, subtropical storms with hurricane force winds are not called hurricanes. They're still subtropical storms. In this case, though, the NHC indicates that Otto will gain tropical characteristics tomorrow and become a hurricane after that.

Extratropical storms with hurricane winds are not uncommon, although such above Cat 1 intensity is rare.

A Subtropical Storm has winds of 39 mph or higher. Therefore, a subtropical storm of hurricane intensity would still be classified as a subtropical storm.

Per NHC definition of a subtropical storm.

I think there'd probably call it a STS cat1, they do something similar with ExT storms though you are right looking at it it will remain a STS even if it got 65kts or above.

That's exceptionally rare anyway and I don't think thats likely here with the pressure gradient that at play.
