Igor is very impressive in terms of size thats for sure, though looks like the GFDL/HWRF were right to think this one will injest some dry air and weaken quite alot once it got to about 30N...

Their intensity forecast may have been off but five days ago the NHC showed where they thought Igor’s center would go and they were off only by about 12 hours or so:

Think about that for a moment.

Just took a look at some Bermuda obs. So far the hourly obs indicate strong TS winds with some gusts to hurricane force. Looks like things there won't be nearly as bad as if Igor had struck with the organization it had 2-3 days ago. I think you can figure out where the winds are in the decoded obs below. Strongest at 1955Z 110 deg 53 kts gusting 66 kts.

Thanks to everyone for their concerns, it's not over yet but soon. I think a lot of the damage will be surge related. Almost 20,000 without power, and a few injuries.
The east end seems to have made it through better then expected, though I just heard the tender Bermudian broke her chains in St, Georges harbor and is now on the rocks!
I know of a few people who chose to ride out the storm in their boats...............I hope they are okay as I fear quite a few are damaged or worse.
Will find out tomorrow the full extent of the damage...............

The lives stream audio & video is still up and running HERE. You just can't see the harbor with the boats due to nightfall. Occasionally, someone comes out side and speaks.

From THIS live blog: "The Government tender boat 'Bermudian' broke from its moorings . The buoy to which it was attached is still in its original location but the boat is being slammed by the surf against the shoreline. Depending on the amount of damage received, it may not be available to tender passengers of the visiting Veendam if she comes in this Tuesday." There are photos on the blog @ 7:10 pm. Also reporting: "The Bermuda Weather Service says Igor’s closest point of approach to Bermuda is forecast in about 2 hours at 10pm – when it will be around 50 miles to our west. It is still carrying maximum sustained winds of 85 mph."

That was a big boat! She's pretty old and probably didn't have too many years left, but that's ominous news. Not many boats are secured as well as those ferries.

After Fabian I remember seeing a house with three boats stacked on what was left of its roof.

another report:
Water is up to the level of the bridge connecting Ordnance Island to the rest of St. George's. King's Square has a couple of inches of water covering it. There's a large yacht has run aground near the Swing Bridge. There also appears to be a powerboat sinking near the same location. Part of the fence around the airport is flapping in the breeze.

For those who are curious, the Ordnance Island bridge is about 6 feet above sea level and in a reasonably sheltered harbor whose primary water access is from the north (i.e. leeward) side. I'd wager that the high water there is surge rather than waves. Yikes.

Even at this early stage without a full assessment of damage and injuries in Bermuda and elsewhere, I think we can safely assume there will be another Igor six years hence. I hope I’m not proven wrong on this score.

Notice the IKE and HDP numbers. This is no ordinary Cat 1 hurricane.
