someone with more knowledge than me will come along and give you a better answer than me, but this is what I know. In the storm there can be mini vortices where the winds can be much higher in a small area, even higher than the highest forecast winds. I know when we experienced one in Hurricane Jeanne, we had no clue it was coming. It was just there.
I know that is probably not the answer you were hoping for, but that is what we experienced. Be sure to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Our prayers are with you all there. Keep us informed so we know you guys are ok.
And no question is a dumb question.
I need to make one correction, I do believe these can be seen on radar.

Keep a close eye on this Bermuda weather link.
Presently winds are fresh but increasing and pressure gradually falling.

It happens here in se Florida alot during storms as well. I know how you feel.
It is a blessing that Igor is not going to have the same punch as originally thought when he was at category 4. It will still be very rough for you guys, and our thoughts and prayers are with you. Knowing you will probably be without communication for awhile, know we will anxiously be waiting for your return. Let us know how things are as long as you safely can, and we look forward to your return. How is the weather there now?

Weather is not too bad at the moment. The wind is fair; about the same as we get in the winter when we get the wind storms! Im suprised but the lack of rain at the moment, but im pretty sure it will be a different story in the morning. I went out earlier on and i can safely say that bermuda has no/or very little beach left on the south shore. The waves are enormous to say the least.

Thanks for letting us know. I know having been hit before that I anxiously await to hear how others are fairing when they are in the path of one. I am glad the rains haven't started up yet. If I recall I don't think that the islands that were to the west of Igor as he went by got lots of rain, so let's hope that is the case here for you all. I know I saw a couple of videos on youtube that people had posted showing the waves there today. It was amazing!

I too am surprised at the little bit of rain...........so far. I blocked up the roof gutters to keep the salt water out though. Had to pump out over 8000 gallons after Fabian!

Another local news site is bernews.com, they have a lot of pictures and some video coverage.

Been on "de rock" most of the last 48 years. Yes to Fabian as well as many others! I still remember going home in the early 70's from school (yay!)
My water tank is small, only about 12,000 gallons and at $80.00 per 1000 gallons, I would rather not get any salt water in it again!

Julia has colder cloud tops that Igor has right now. At least she has a more intense center going on.

SMFR only supports 70 knots so far...using an 85% reduction on flight level winds (supposed to use 90% in the eyewall and 85% outside of the eyewall, but in the convection...however, given the lack of high winds last flight and the deteriorating convection, I will use 85%), and the max flight level wind thus far is 91 knots, comes out to 77.35 knots on the surface.

70 or 75 knots looks good right now.

Agreed with 75 kt - that has to be a record low for a storm with a pressure of 948mb.

Seems like the winds have been dropping off quite fast. Will it still be an H1 on approach or will it drop below that? News stories are claiming it will approach as an H2.
