This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Weird Question...

#1 Postby Guest » Tue Aug 12, 2003 10:33 am

While we are waiting for recon to fly to see if 91L invest will be TD8 - I have a question - how many people that have been through TD, TS or Hurricanes - sleep through them? Or do you stay awake the whole time?

I know this is one of those weird questions.

I was awake when I lived through Hurricane Gloria and Hurricane Bob (in southern New England) in 1985 and 1991, respectively. The majority of both storms went through during the day (as tropical systems that move up the coast typically accelerate to 30+ miles per hour).

I was never usually awake between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM like I have been for the last several months, so some tropical storms I have lived through I never was awake during, aside from waking up during them if they were occuring in the middle of the night, toward dawn.

Depends on the severity of the storm. I try to stay awake as long as I can.

Hmmm, Hurricane Hugo - I stayed awake until about 4 am in the morning (after the winds came down below 50 mph-60 mph) and was up bright and early around 8:30 am.

Hurricane Floyd - actually fell asleep before midnight (since we lost power around 11:15 pm.). Winds were still gusting over 60 mph at times. (My ex-girlfriend stayed with me during Floyd 'cuz she wasn't staying in that mobile home).

Generally, I've always stayed awake through the heart (or worst part) of the storm ...

I was a little girl for Hurricane Betsy. My parents stayed up all night, finally went to sleep around 5 am. Woke up a few hours later and the subdivision was under water. We got out by boat. I will never forget it as long as I live. Panic in the streets everywhere.

Wide awake with DP, iced tea, coffee...and Slim Jim's!

When I was on the coast that was protocal  . Now inland, the web site and email list require full time attention when something comes in. Then, 6 hrs sleep with the hope there's no inland flooding or the cycle starts anew. What a life

I stay awake if a storm is making landfall hundreds of miles away from me! I usually follow it on the internet and wait to see Jim Cantore from The Weather Channel being pounded by wind and rain.

If you ever see Jim Cantore driving through your neighborhood, you should probably evacuate. I get a kick out of him on the scene of a landfall.

A friend of mine arrived here in the morning after a 22-hour bus ride from Mexico. She went to sleep at about 8:30 and I came to work. Then Allison hit. I called her when I knew what was happening to see if she was alright. She woke up, answered the phone, grumbled about me waking her up, and then went back to sleep. I called again later to ask if she was okay. Still asleep. "I'll talk to you when you get home." So when I got home, I asked if she got to watch any of it.

"Nope." Slept through all of the initial landfall.
