It would probably be at least a Cat 3 if Recon was not available.

Wow what a way to finish off June. Although I don't agree with the Cat 2 designation due to recons failure to find winds strong enough, it's probably not far off anyway and the pressure and presentation looks like a low end Cat 3. I'm kind of sad to watch Alex go because that means we'll probably have to wait 10-14 days for another system and I doubt it will be as strong as Alex.

The eye now has a better shape than it was before and the rain in the eye is starting to clear up.

This storm would be a Category 3 (maybe 4) if it wasn't so large. Big storms in the GOM seem to take longer for the winds to catch up with the pressure.

There was the same story with Ike. It was so huge in the GOM so it couldn't intensify to like a Major. It almost did though.

25 miles till touchdown. Will be within 1-2 hours until landfall. Give credit to the NHC for creating a near perfect intensity forecast for Alex when it was a tropical storm.

Recon found 103 knot flight level winds in northern eyewall; seems that category two is justified.
