Need 60 kt FL winds to support current intensity on that basis, need 80 kt to support Hurricane Alex.

I'd imagine they probably will find the 60kts they are looking for in that deep convection that has blown up. Anyway yah as others have said its diverted off...

Totally placed the plane in the wrong quadrant... took a quick wind sketch to un-confuse myself. Had gotten to the point where I could visualize everything from the obs, but it's been a few seasons since I last followed recon flights.

I'm guessing they thought there was no real need to fly at 850mbs then afterall?

Using 75%, you would need a wind of roughly 85 knots from the plane. That would translate to 63.75 knots on the surface. (86 is 64.5 and 87 breaks the 65 knot barrier).
