With the damage to roads and bridges and the airport control tower, to say nothing of the loss of life of so many UN and UNICEF staff, contact with Haiti is almost non-existant at the moment with no telephones and no power. I am sure the aid agencies will all be seeking extra funds. I have attached a list of possible recipients should anyone wish to help - my personal favourite is the Red Cross. A Haitian doctor who works here in the Dominican Republic will be leaving for Port-au-Prince shortly with clothes and medicines and we hope he can get through.

American Red Cross:
American Red Cross
Text [b]"HAITI" to "90999"
& a $10 donation will be given to Red Cross for Haiti relief. ... Please RT

Thanks Gustywind for posting these. My heart goes out to all those in Haiti. I did the above that I highligthed in red. I am not good at texting but I finally figured out how to do it! Image
I received a response and they asked for a reply of "yes" if I wish to donate so I replied yes. It was easier than I thought and I received a confirmation that they received my donation. Image

No problem my friend :) i appreciate too...

It is going to get much, much worse before it gets better, sadly. And better in Haiti is a relative term. :(

Anyone have a direct link to the Salvation Army for donations? Money to the SA goes directly to those in need.

Publix Supermarket is accepting donations at check out to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development Fund. Just FYI, since some were asking about donating. I happened to be doing my weekly grocery run and saw the signs at check-out. I did donate. This is just so horrific for this deprived nation. My heart breaks for them!

major disturbance has been shown live on CNN.

Seems there are fears of flooding that triggered a mass migration of people

After such a tragedy, the only words out of Pat Roberson's mouth is to offend the Haitian people. WOW, unbelievable.

Hello all,

Here in the DR we were more affraid than anything else, the earthquake was felt in the city but not with no other consencuences other than a big scare and more so with the tsunami warning..

Now that we are feeling mostly safe, i am just very sad because of what is happening to the haitian brothers and sisters, i have lots of haitian friends and it almost brings tears to my eyes to see the dispair and helpless feeling i seein their faces for the fact of not knowing for certain what happened to their families and expecting the worse...as it is not easy living in haiti and now this catastrophic earthquake its them to makes all matters just beyond unbearable..it is one think to watch from a distance and another living the nightmare those poor people are going through.

Let´s lend a helping hand from where ever we are , doesn´t matter how small, it will still help..when you have nothing anything is very welcome..

Jolie-Pitt Foundation donated $1,000,000 to Doctors Without Borders emergency medical services to Haiti. I recall that they also helped us after Katrina. Fine people!

Right now they are looking at $100M coming from Canada (our Government says they will double individual Canadian contributions).....

Ottawa matching Canadians' Haiti donations
Pledge of up to $50M comes as military moves to assist rescue efforts
Last Updated: Thursday, January 14, 2010 | 10:12 AM ET Comments66Recommend29CBC News
Canadian military personnel load disaster relief supplies aboard HMCS Athabaskan on Wednesday in Halifax. (Mike Dembeck/Canadian Press)The federal government is earmarking up to $50 million to match Canadians' donations to charities aiding relief efforts in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

Minister of International Co-operation Bev Oda said Thursday morning the government will match the contributions of individuals to eligible Canadian charitable organizations in support of humanitarian and recovery efforts in response to the earthquake, up to a total of $50 million.

The money contributed would be managed through the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, run by the Canadian International Development Agency, said Oda.

The financial pledge came as two Canadian naval ships were mobilizing to leave Halifax to join military forces in the poverty-stricken country.

The frigate HMCS Halifax and the destroyer HMCS Athabaskan are being loaded with first-aid kits, a Sea King helicopter and other supplies and equipment. They are expected to leave port Thursday and arrive in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince early next week.

Haiti contacts
Canadians with family in Haiti can call the Foreign Affairs Emergency Operations Centre in Ottawa at 800-387-3124, 613-943-1055, or email sos@international.gc.ca. Canadians in Haiti can get in touch with Canadian Embassy officials in Port-au-Prince by calling 613-996-8885.
The two ships will also be carrying as many as 500 sailors and Canadian Forces personnel.

The first wave of Canada's Disaster Assistance Response Team — a Hercules transport aircraft with a 20-person Canadian Forces assessment group — departed Wednesday and has already touched down in the Dominican Republic, neighbouring Haiti.

A C-130 tactical plane and C-17 cargo jet carrying a helicopter, personnel and tonnes of food and water as part of Canada's Disaster Assistance Response Team were deployed early Thursday morning.

Defence Minister Peter McKay told a news conference Thursday a second C-17 is expected to depart CFB Trenton later in the day. He said as many as a couple of hundred Canadian Forces members will be in Haiti by the end of the day Thursday.

Oda had earlier said Canada will provide up to $5 million in immediate aid, including emergency shelter, medical services, food, relief items, water, and sanitation services and protection.

How to help
To help those affected by the earthquake, here's a list of organizations accepting donations.
A number of provinces and cities across Canada have also pledged support for the devastated Caribbean country.

Infrastructure in ruin
Lt.-Col. Dave Murphy said the operation in Haiti is just getting started.

"It's going to be a very large-scope operation," he said. "This may continue for quite some time which we are well prepared to support in the manner that's required."

The International Red Cross has estimated three million people — a third of the population — may need emergency relief that includes shelter, food and clean water.

The death toll from Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake is still unclear, but Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN Wednesday that it could be "well over 100,000."

The Canadian Forces can expect difficulties in providing aid, as the earthquake has damaged much of the country's infrastructure, including roads and power lines and facilities such as hospitals.

Cmdr. Art McDonald, captain of HMCS Halifax, said Wednesday the goal is to protect the vulnerable.

"A troubled and desperate population is going to be looking for help at a time when there is critical infrastructure that's been damaged," he said.

He expects the crews will be doing light engineering work similar to what was done in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

From the looks of the aerial shots the media report that the city was "mostly destroyed" could have been somewhat exaggerated. Now is the critical time to free trapped persons. Water is also critical.

(Disclaimer: for those who will think I'm minimizing this second terrible natural catastrophe in a decade)

President Rene Preval said the damage was "unimaginable". I don't think the pics coming in from CNN are exaggerated. In fact I think they are intentionally editing the worst scenes as the graphic content is extreme. I've been through the most powerful earthquake on the North American continent.....9.2 Alaska. I know the fears of the people on the ground. If I could do anything right now.....I would want to be in Haiti. Children dying for lack of medical attention is unacceptable in my book.
