Attempted act of terrorism failed on plane bound to Detroit

#1 Postby cycloneye » Fri Dec 25, 2009 7:23 pm

This is serious as first it was firecrackers but then as more information became more clear, this was an Al Qaeda attack but fortunate it failed because it would have been a big disaster.

ROMULUS, Mich. - A Nigerian man claiming ties to al-Qaida tried to light a powder aboard a commercial jetliner before it landed Friday in Detroit in what senior U.S. officials called an attempted act of terrorism.

“He appears to have had some kind of incendiary device he tried to ignite,” a senior U.S. official told NBC News. Other officials said the explosive device was a mixture of powder and liquid, which failed when the passenger tried to detonate it during the plane’s descent into Detroit International Airport.

Two people noticed the attempted attack, and a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News. The man was being treated at the burn unit of the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, officials said.

What failed miserably was security. How the hcck did something like that even get on a plane?

Thats what I was about to say, don't they you know, not allow powders and gels and things of that sort?

Great, I'm flying in a week or so, they'll probably strip us down to our underwear after this.

And more troublesom is that he was on a watch list that homeland security has but he sneaked into the plane in Amsterdam.

Here is the man (Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab) who was about to cause a horrible terror attack that thankfully some passengers subdued him before the powerful detonator exploded. He has been charged.

he should have been shot in site in accordance with the Geneva conventions on unidentified partisans. We did this in the past

Terrorists will succeed again. Anyone that spends enough time flying and in airports knows we have vulnerable areas. TSA is the equivalent of a padlock keeping an honest man from bringing a regular size tube of toothpaste on board. While a suicidal terrorist can walk on with plastic explosives in his clothing.

I am of the opinion that TSA alone creates a greater danger simply by coraling so many passengers into a maze. They have more people standing in a line that weaves around back and forth than you have on an entire aircraft. What if the next terrorist realizes he can kill more people in the airport than on the plane?

I don't even take my quart ziplock baggie out anymore. Nobody notices. My carry on slides right through the scanner.

The best security I have witnessed happened recently at San Juan, P.R. They have Beagles (dogs) inside the TSA secure area sniffing baggage and people through out the concourse after they have cleared TSA.

As many in media and Government have said, truly a Christmas miracle that it did not succeed - as witnesses stated, the terrorist appeared "surprised" that it did not work as planned, and it was for his benefit, too, since he's now imprisoned for the attempted act - but not mass murder...

As the Bible says, "The Lord loves the just...but the way of the wicked he thwarts."

Let us give thanks to God for permitting Christmas Day in America to go on as planned (since that happened just before Noon (ET) and no doubt would have brought Christmas Day to a terrible halt nationwide)...

Frank

P.S. Some might ask why did God prevent this and others and not the 9/11 attacks, but as often said by officials, experts and media, those could have very easily happened several hours later, with 3 times the number of deaths, but thankfully for unknown reasons were not allowed to transpire that way...

Yeah, I'm pretty amazed this hasn't happened yet.

By the way, I didn't notice any different procedures in effect when I flew home from Boston yesterday.

I expect that eventually we will have gated airports. Similar to a military base/post. A single entry point of inspection is not enough.

Americans will feel "a certain shock" after reading Thursday's report on the missed warning signs, White House national security adviser James Jones told USA Today.

:uarrow: From CNN online. Looks like our intelligence community dropped the ball bigtime.

Obama=The buck stops with me

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/obama-releases ... id=9501601

President Obama said "a systemic failure" in the intelligence community was to blame for not uncovering the Christmas Day plane bomb plot but that any failures were ultimately his responsibility.

President Barack Obama releases report on attempted Christmas terrorist attack."This incident was not the fault of a single individual or organization, but rather a systemic failure across organizations and agencies," the president said at the White House. "Ultimately the buck stops with me."

He is correct in his statement, but he has people working for him/us who aren't supposed to let the ball drop like it did and some heads need to roll!! !st out the door should be Napolitano(sp)since she is next in line below him. It is her responsibility to make the machine run correctly and smoothly and she obviously is not doing that.

The report added that the counterterrorism community failed, "starting with establishing rules and protocols, to assign responsibility and accountability for follow up of high priority threat streams, run down all leads, and track them through to completion."

:uarrow: Blatant failure sounds better than systemic failure. Or maybe.....All the lights are on and nobody is home.....?

How does a man on a watch list, whose very own father turns him in as a potential terrorist, plunk down $3,000 in cash and get on a plane anywhere?
