A helicopter's aerial shot shows a white sheet covering the body of a student who was stabbed to death in a west courtyard inside Coral Gables Senior High on Tuesday morning.
A student was killed at Coral Gables High School Tuesday morning, according to law enforcement and school officials.
The Miami-Dade school district confirmed the victim is a student.
A student was in custody in the stabbing death, according to a law enforcement source.
Miami-Dade police said they were conducting a death investigation at the school, 450 Bird Rd., and homicide detectives were en route.
``It has not been classified as of yet until investigators get to the scene, gather evidence and talk to witnesses,'' said Detective Bobby Williams, a Miami-Dade police spokesman.
Sharon Watson, vice president of fundraising and former president of the school's PTSA, said school administrators contacted parents of all students involved.
``If you have not heard anything -- even from your child -- everything's OK,'' said Watson, speaking to The Miami Herald from the school's parking lot.
Watson learned about the stabbing from her daughter, Shannon, a senior at Coral Gables who texted her mother to tell her the school was on lockdown -- and then that there had been a stabbing and a fatality.
``I'm in a state of absolute shock that something like this would happen,'' said Watson, whose son graduated from the school in 2008. ``It's a safe school; it's in a good area. The administration is on top of things.
``There's not a single day I haven't been comfortable sending my child to school.''
The school went on lockdown following the 9:13 a.m. call.
Watson advised parents to stay home, since students are not being released from the school yet.
However, the school district is making arrangements for parents who want to pick up their children to do so near the school's baseball diamond.
An overhead shot from a helicopter showed what appeared to be a body covered by a white sheet in the courtyard.
Frantic parents rushed to the school Tuesday morning, leaving cars haphazardly on the side streets, and running to the building crying.
Tom Harley, who lives near the school and has a daughter in the ninth grade, saw helicopters flying overhead Tuesday morning and wondered what had happened.
A few minutes later, he got a text message from his daughter, Elizabeth.
``She texted they're under lockdown,'' he said. ``Until we heard from her, definitely we were concerned.''
Officials at the school could not immediately say what occurred at the school, but said several units were responding.
``It's a crime scene, I don't have any other information,'' said Division Chief Hope Gibbs with Coral Gables Fire Rescue.
