Re: C/SC TX Weather #1: Ghost of Summer 1980
Keep an eye on future guidance. While everyone is busy watching the Atlantic, perhaps we may need to look to the EPAC (Rosa senario) to break this drought.

Re: C/SC TX Weather #1: Ghost of Summer 1980
We moved here in 1998. In that time it seems like we've had rain here more often from EPAC storms than ones coming in off the GOM. Most GOM storms seem to go east/ north of here or south. Last year storms went south, north, east and west of us.
We've pretty much given up on the back yard. It looks diseased - tan, yellow for the most part with green splotches. The front yard is still mostly green because there's more shade.
This is the last week of 2x watering tho. After Monday we'll only be watering 1x. I guess I'll water longer - at least in the front yard. I don't want our trees to die. I also don't want foundation problems so I'll keep watering near the foundation.

Uh, er,....Spock.......I see little here to support human life or life of any kind for that matter. Beam me back up and lets go to 45 degrees north lattitude....we might have better luck there.

It 'only' got to 99 yesterday.
Already 101 at Mabry, 99 so far at Bergstrom. I'm sure it will go over 100 at Bergstrom but I'll wait till it does to actually add a 100 day there..
So, so far 60/47 (Mabry/Bergstrom)
Current 100+ records (for anyone who hasn't been keeping up)
Bergstrom 50
Mabry 66 (1923) 69 (1925)

Both the GFS and Euro this morning don't show much in terms of rain chances until, at the very earliest, next weekend. Depressing.

I think Lucy left Texas due to lack of work!!!
Do you guys expect any rain out of the front currently moving South?

At what point does one give up the ghost on watering the lawn?I feel like I'm losing the war.
I'd be just as happy if you guys in Austin got the rain, if we didn't get any.

Thanks Ptarmigan ... too bad you can't control the weather!
vbhoutex, it is possible that an outflow boundary might kick up a few storms here but the front appears to have washed out north of us. We all should know better that cold fronts in August rarely occur. Right now, radar returns show nothing but a few showers to our northwest by about 100 miles. That's it. Looking pretty grim.
Lucy? I haven't seen Lucy in ages!

We have more showing on radar than you do, but most of it is to our East and South and moving away from me. Meanwhile it is 100ºf with an HI of 108ºf.

I have a good analogy for any of you who have been tubing on the San Marcos or Guadalupe rivers here in Texas. You know when you are tubing and you find yourself stuck off on the edge of the river under a bunch of low-hanging branches in a stagnant pool of slow-moving water with a bunch of debris floating in it and the water isn't going anywhere and you just go round and round.....Well, thats analogous to our atmosphere here in sc texas most of the time. That cool clear fast-running refreshing water out there in the middle of the river (where you want your tube to be) is the jet stream and it is where all the action is. The further you get from the Jet Stream the more stagnant your weather becomes. On average, South Texas is about as far removed from the Jet Stream as you can get in the lower 48. Of course, we won't get a chance to demonstrate this analogy again until we get enough water back in the rivers to tube again.

Very good analogy!
I hope El Nino puts us back in the middle of the river.

Both Mabry and Bergstrom hit or exceeded 100 degrees today.
62/50
We've had some isolated showers/storms in the last 30 minutes but so far the largest, strongest cell has been east of the Austin metro. Figures.

We were downtown at the convention center and came out to wind, threatening skies, lightning off to the east and a few rain drops. It never actually rained at the house.
Bergstrom has now tied the all time 100+ for that location.

Yeah there was a fairly healthy cell, albeit small, that rolled south down the east side of the county. I'm sure folks between Austin and Bastrop got some rain out of it. Nearly all of us in the metro area got nothing but clouds. And humidity.
I suspect today will be day 63 for Mabry and 51 for Bergstrom in terms of reaching or exceeding 100 degrees. And, our most stringent water restrictions begin tomorrow. No more water in restaurants unless you ask for it! Man, I never thought I'd see the day ...

They had the no water unless asked for where we lived somewhere before - I think it was Dallas in 1980. It's been a while!
Another hackberry fell yesterday in our neighbor's yard. It fell away from our fence. They told me they gave up on watering. There's another one that's dying and *is* going to crash thru one of our fences - if not now, during the next windstorm. And the mulberry is looking bad too.
What concerns me is that even the use of soaker hoses is restricted to once a week - the same day we can use the sprinklers. I think I'm going to stop watering most of the backyard and concentrate on the area around the house and the trees and garden.
I can hand water (which is what I'll have to do to the trees out front) but I think hand watering the foundation will be less water efficient than soaker hoses. The Indian Hawthorne is burning - I've never seen that before.
Currently 102 at both Mabry and Bergstrom. Record at both is 103 - and I'm pretty sure it's going to be either tied or broken at both places.
As of 5pm, it's 105F at Mabry breaking the 103 held since 1917. Bergstrom's tied w/ 1978 @ 103
63/51
New record for Bergstrom of 100+ days. That will last till tomorrow. After today, every 100F + day will be a new record. Just 3 more days to tie the 2nd place record at Mabry, 6 to tie the all time Mabry record.

I think I missed it while sneezing. Who knew you could have high mold levels in record heat and drought?
Today is the last day of 2x week watering. Down to 1. Hope they don't go to zero! I know people outside the city who are going from watering every day to 3x week (voluntary) after me whining about the drought...
