This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Dumb question but ive got to ask

#1 Postby george_r_1961 » Fri Aug 07, 2009 10:24 pm

What are the chances of seeing no named storms this year? Or more realistically maybe three??

Everything coming off Africa is getting assaulted with either dry air or shear, or both. I cant remember seeing the tropics looking like this in August in a longgggg time. I mean there is nothing out there showing any signs of development.

You question yourself when will the Atlantic come alive but don't worry, sooner or later a disturbance will find favorable conditions and develop, either in the tropics or subtropics. It's looking later rather than sooner but something will develop. It will really be incredible to see a season without named storms but I don't think that will happen this year.

Don't bet on it happening, late Aug thru Sept & even into early Oct is usually a busy time in the Tropics. Sure the season may be dampened somewhat by el nino & other factors, like SAL, cooler SSt's, etc. But we all know that the tropics can get busy in a hurry & it's just a matter of time before the season gets going...............

Except for Hurricane Alex which formed on July 31, I seem to remember thinking this in 2004 as well...

I think it's impossible for there to be NO named storms in a season. It's possible we could only see 3 but even that's a big stretch. It's only early August I'm sure there will be more than 3 named storms.

Not at all, I'm pretty sure there have been such years. Anyway, I think the last time it was this quiet was 1992 (another El Nino year, BTW) when the infamously destructive Andrew came a callin'. The lesson here is not to let our guards down till mid December! :sun:

There hasn't been a year without a TS in the recorded history of the Atlantic basin (since 1851).

Maybe it's a record setting year of a different kind!
