This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Go 'Canes....as a University of Miami grad, my team couldn't be more connected to hurricanes...the University was founded in 1926....what else happened in Miami in 1926? The Great Miami Hurricane (how the team name came about!!!)

Talk about bad timing.....plans for a 50,000-seat on-campus stadium were proposed in 1926 by the school's first president, Bowman Foster Ashe. Work began on a temporary, 8,000-seat structure on campus, but one day later, on September 17, 1926, the Great Miami Hurricane leveled much of South Florida, killing more than 130 people, damaging over 10,000 homes and shelving plans for the stadium. From 1926 to 1937 the University of Miami played in a stadium near Tamiami Park and also at Moore Park until Burdine Stadium (later named the Miami Orange Bowl) was built.

Due to the storm, classes started late and it wasn't until October 23 that Miami played its first game, a 7–0 win over Rollins in front of 304 spectators. The season included two wins over the University of Havana, with a Thanksgiving Day game in Miami and a Christmas Day meeting in Cuba.

I think I also found some Hurricanes at the University of Miami, it's almost football season, so I think we'll see some out on the field really soon. :D

According to the NHC, from the period 1944-2005, the average date of the first hurricane has been.....drum roll.....August 14!!!

This might blow some minds even more....for the same period of years, the average date of the first major hurricane (cat 3 or higher) is September 3.

July 10 is normally the first named system and we haven't even had that yet.

true, but the post asks where the hurricanes are....climatologically speaking, the average date for the first hurricane is 11 days off....and 31 days off for the climatological date for the first major

For all we know, the first named storm this year could be a major hurricane - it could be like 1980, 1983 and 1992...

I see your point, but I can also see why that maybe is not the wisest thing to say.

if 2009 ends up like 1914 or 1983, and there are no landfalls in populated areas then all well and good.

I swear I went through a hurricane in 1983. I think her name was Alicia. Maybe I am wrong.

I am thinking you meant a light year for hurricane/tropical storm production.

An example that "inactive season" is not equal to "no damages".

Because I am kind of a dork I'm posting it...

It'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
Said sugar make it slow
And we'll come together fine
All we need is just a little patience
(inhale) Patience...
Ooh, oh, yeah

This is the year of a threat to Hawai'i 2 or 3 times a month.

I got bombed by kamikazes in Pearl Harbor (ok, I was in Honolulu, my ship was in Pearl Harbor) on December 7th, 1988.

Iwa, in an El Nino year, was a November storm. So plenty of opportunity for storms.
