I concur.
Twitter is fine between family members for status checks. Otherwise, you can't beat those three.

Why not just email or call family members? I don't think any of my family members even use Twitter, or not that I know of. All of them have phones and email, though. I've peeked at Twitter a few times, but never "used" it, so I guess I just don't really know what the benefits are. I don't think I had even heard of it until a few months ago  but all I hear lately is Twitter this and Twitter that. When I hear Twitter, I think of birds.

I second that, and I am 18! It just has never really caught my interest. I did set up an account there, but I've only used it once...I hope I have the password saved, or I prolly wont remember it! I text a lot, and will use that as checks for whatever I need them for.

Texting seems to work best durring and just after a storm. But, my mother doesn't have texting on her plan. She has finally started to use her cellphone after a decade of just having it in her purse. sheesh.
The reason that twittering durring/after a storm is good is because cell networks have been the most reliable in my experience. And you can tweet from a cell phone. Personally, I prefer texting hands down. Tweeting is nice because you can send one and many people can see it.

Storm2k, period. Here, everyone is welcome to give their opinion, from amateurs to experts, and everyone is respected. Here, you can find the latest computer model runs and get everyone's opinion on them. Here, you can get the latest information from the Hurricane Hunters.

Here, you can find a great community full of people who love to discuss the weather and share knowledge and experiences. You can't find that on Twitter.

Sounds like your Mom is further along than mine is even though she says she carries it with her. I have yet to see it and actually wonder if it even works or if she has changed her plan in all that time.

Your mom is further ahead than mine, my mom doesn't even own a cell phone-lol, but she lives with me, so I don't have to worry about her. But I do text the rest of my family that doesn't live near me during and after a storm. I did set up a Twitter acount, but I haven't tweeted yet-lol, and I don't remember my password... lol

Millions of people use some type of Social Media platform that either sends updates on the fly to cell phones, PDA’s, email and becomes extremely viral within hours if it’s a important topic. I love S2K, but it reaches people that are already are aware of a hurricanes developing, or weather situation from the great group professionals and enthusiasts on the board that enjoy tracking cyclones. S2K is great on educating on a storm threat with up to the minute on a storm, but it’s focused toward the educated weather community.

The questions was “Which is Better For Hurricanes: Social Media / Forums?”

It all depends for what? Post storm information, a storm threat, tracking? It was never really specified in the question for what outside of just tracking. Sure the NHC /NWS sites are the best for hurricane information, but they are not Social Media / forums like the question asked. If it’s to get information out to the mass population in a short time fast about a threat, I say social media today. If you want more detailed information and to analyze a storm / threat, then forums like Storm2k are great. Social media in some topics surpasses TV media today…. And things that go viral set the pace of TV news programming sometimes now. A lot of TV news networks get their leads from Social Media trends.

I guess it all depends on what type of information your trying to get out about a hurricane, and when.

I lost my home in Rita and had heavy damage in Ike. All I can say is that the great folks here on Storm2K had me out of my home and out of danger BEFORE the media even thought of an evacuation. I trust the great minds here and I will not trust the media when it comes to my families well being. I don't want to be caught in the panicked masses at the last minute and to date, since Storm2K, I haven't had that problem.

You have a good point. I was only thinking about communicationg with friends and family durring and after a storm. I never even thought about that question in any other way. For real weather information, you can't beat the NHC and local news stations.
