Instead of people taking a piece of bread from the loaf and dipping it in the wine, we served it the usual way with our small wafers and individaul small cups. It is much more intimate and meaningful when we do it by "intinction", but due to the H1N1 concerns we did not do it that way as had been initially planned.

It's better to be safe than sorry. I'm sure that the church will be able to go back to that next time around.
Well, much of the ritual of Holy Communion is about faith. While some denominations believe that the bread (usually in the form of wafers) and wine (some churches use non-alcoholic wine or grape juice) are just representative of the body and blood of Jesus, other churches believe that the bread and wine are transformed into Jesus' actual body and blood during the rite.

With this in mind, some people strongly believe that they can never get sick by sharing a communion cup with others. That belief alone may be powerful enough to keep them from becoming ill from bacteria or viruses that might be present on the cup.

Even with this pending pandemic, I myself have no qualms about drinking from the same cup of others but respect those who would not do it.

Mexico returning to normal life

MEXICO CITY – Mexico began a cautious return to normal Tuesday, the government cancelling Cinco de Mayo celebrations as traffic picked up in the capital and cafes reopened following a five-day shutdown to contain swine flu.

The canceled events included the largest one — a re-enactment of the May 5, 1862, victory over French troops in the central state of Puebla. And health experts warned that Mexico and the rest of the world needed to remain on guard against the virus.

Saying the outbreak is waning in Mexico, the epicenter of an illness that has sickened hundreds around the world, President Felipe Calderon announced it was nearly time to reopen businesses. Universities and high schools will open their doors Thursday, and younger schoolchildren are to report back to school May 11.

"The school schedule will resume with the guarantee that our educational institutions are in adequate hygienic condition," Calderon said. He urged parents to join educators in a "collective" cleansing and inspection of schools nationwide.

"This is about going back to normalcy, but with everyone taking better care," Calderon said.

U.S. officials say Flu milder than initially feared,no longer recommending school closings

ATLANTA – U.S. health officials are no longer recommending that schools close because of swine flu.

The government last week advised schools to shut down for about two weeks if there were suspected cases of swine flu. Hundreds of schools around the country have followed that guidance and closed schools.

Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday that the swine flu virus had turned out to be milder than initially feared and the government decided to change its advice. Sebelius says parents should still make sure to keep sick children at home. Those with flulike symptoms should stay home for seven days.

I've been on two jobs bidding some specialty work in SW Mississippi. Lots of workers from different regions. My wife works on a campus. Large transient community for both of us.

We are both feeling a bit funky. Not up to par. Some diarrhea, fatigue and light congestion. We have obviously caught something. But it is not bad. I've had worse hangovers.

We have quarantined ourselves and remain determined to finish eating our MRE's from Katrina and watch old movies. Especially Meg Ryan movies.

I'm not kidding. The really cool thing about this time alone is that we will celebrate our 28th anniversary on the 8th.

We wish you well.

We were both carrying a slight fever......101. As of this morning....mine is normal. With the exception of some congestion, I feel pretty good. Just a slight headache remaining. I might even shave this morning.

On the other hand Bec is fighting fatigue. Her immune system has been compromised by all the chemo. One of her yoga buddies dropped off a jug of fresh Tamarind tea yesterday. It's tasty! Kept us well hydrated.

We've been sitting here wondering where we caught this "bug"? The kids on campus are not sick.....so that kind of rules out Bec bringing it home. I did look at a job south of us down on the Pearl river delta. Big farm, 5000+ acres. They have a wild hog problem. There are 7 miles of electric fence keeping the hogs away from the peanuts growing. I spent some time speaking with the man that keeps watch over the fences.....they call him the "hog killer". I'm wondering now if that was the contamination point. Merely speculation.

We don't know because we didn't get tested. We just sheltered in place. But if this was H1N1 we have/had......it's not that bad.

The only medications we used were NielMed sinus rinse and Tylenol. And LOTS of toilet paper. Darned diarrhea was the worse part.

CNN reporting World Health Org. advises 3440 confirmed cases in 29 countries with 48 deaths. Count includes 1639 in the U.S. God only knows how many cases have slipped through the cracks without a confirmed diagnosis.

It's my understanding that the term "pandemic" is used in a geographic application and not the number of cases. I'm wondering when WHO will officially use the term "pandemic"?

If I understand/remember correctly when flu cases are reported they normally say at least triple what is reported and that is probably a lot closer to the actual number. I think your understanding is correct Dionne. I've been wondering when they were going to make it official too. If that doesn't happen now, my guess is that it will happen in the "normal" flu season. Hopefully there will be enough vaccine by then to keep things from getting too out of control, especially in third world countries.

Just don't overdo the liquid intake. "Everything in moderation" is a good maxim. Even a simple thing like water taken in excess can kill you by causing a condition called "hyponatremia". There's also the danger of blood vessels rupturing in your brain. Don't take my word for it - Google it.

Get well soon. :sun:

A friend of mine went to Borders to get his mom a gift card for Mothers Day, He has allergies and coughed into his hand. A man that was in the cafe came running over and cursing at him. He had a young child and my friend didn't want to continue the cursing but he has this wierd sense of humor and coughed on purpose and didn't cover his mouth. The man had a mask around his neck and not over his face and was acting really wierd so my friend went and notified the manager. Paranoia and hardly any disease. I can't imagine how people are going to react if and when their is a pandemic. Will we be assaulted or lynched for coughing or sneezing in the grocery store?
