TV ratings: ABC dominates Monday with 'Dancing'
Rerun-laden night on CBS isn't much of a challenge

April 21, 2009

Fast National ratings for Monday, April 20, 2009

CBS went heavy on reruns Monday night and "House" took the week off on FOX, leaving ABC without much competition for the top spot in the ratings.

ABC averaged a 9.6 rating/15 share for the night, drawing 5 million more viewers than its closest rival. FOX and CBS tied for second in households at 5.8/9, with FOX bringing in a few more total viewers. NBC, 4.1/7, took fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.6/2.

ABC also led among adults 18-49, although the margin wasn't as great. It drew a 3.5 rating in the demographic to beat out CBS' 3.0. FOX, 2.8, came in third, followed by NBC at 2.6. The CW earned a 1.2.

"Dancing With the Stars" delivered a 12.5/20 for ABC at 8 p.m. A special showing of "Bones," 5.4/8, was a distant second for FOX. Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" put CBS in third. "Chuck" earned a 3.6/6 for NBC, while "Gossip Girl" scored a 1.6/2 for The CW.

The end of "Dancing With the Stars," 13.9/21, and "Surviving Suburbia," 7.2/11, kept ABC in the lead at 9. CBS moved up to second with a "Two and a Half Men" repeat, 7.1/11, and "Rules of Engagement," 6.6/10. FOX got a 6.1/9 from "24." NBC's "Heroes" drew a 3.9/6. "One Tree Hill" held steady for The CW.

CBS took over at 10 with a rerun of "The Mentalist," 6.1/10. "Castle," 5.7/9, improved a little over last week's performance and kept ABC ahead of NBC and "Medium," 4.9/8.

NBC has pulled Kings off Saturdays effective immediately and will now burn the episodes off this summer.

TV ratings: Disco demolition for 'American Idol' Tuesday
FOX records its usual victory for the night

April 22, 2009

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, April 21, 2009

Disco night on "American Idol" carried FOX to its customary spot atop Tuesday's ratings -- and the show ended on time, too.

FOX averaged a 9.9 rating/15 share for the night, grabbing 6 million more viewers than second-place CBS, 6.8/11. NBC, 5.6/9, edged ABC, 5.4/9, for third place. The CW earned a 1.6/2.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 6.0 rating easily led the field. NBC took second at 3.4, a point better than CBS' 2.4. ABC averaged 1.9 and The CW 1.0.

"American Idol" delivered a 13.6/22 for FOX at 8 p.m., a slight improvement over last week's show. NBC was a distant second with "The Biggest Loser: Couples," 5.4/9. Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory," 4.0/7, and "Two and a Half Men," 4.5/7, gave CBS the No. 3 spot. An hour of "According to Jim" was fourth for ABC, topping the 1.6/3 for "Reaper" on The CW.

ABC moved in front at 9 o'clock with "Dancing with the Stars," 9.4/14. An "NCIS" rerun scored a 7.9/12 for CBS. "The Biggest Loser," 6.4/10, took third in households for NBC, but FOX's "Fringe" (6.3/9) had a few more total viewers. The CW held the line with "90210."

At 10, a rerun of "The Mentalist" scored an 8.1/14. A "Law & Order: SVU" rerun, 4.9/8, beat out a special showing of "The Unusuals," 4.2/7, on ABC.

Obama wants another hour next Wednesday for yet another STUPID primetime press conference. At least Wednesday at 8 is pretty dull with no big shows on, but it's still ridiculous.

TONIGHT: Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice return, plus Survivor, CSI, Harper's Island, The Office, 30 Rock, Southland, Bones, and Hell's Kitchen are new.

TV ratings: 'American Idol' dominates Wednesday
FOX rules an otherwise quiet night

April 23, 2009

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, April 22, 2009

"American Idol" drew its typically big audience Wednesday, but the last night before sweeps was otherwise a pretty soft one in the ratings.

FOX easily won the night with a 9.4 rating/15 share and about 15.6 million viewers. CBS, 6.3/10, came in second. NBC, 4.0/7, finished third, followed by ABC at 3.5/6. The CW drew a 1.8/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 5.2 rating more than doubled the 2.5 for second-place CBS. ABC, 2.1, was third, followed by NBC, 1.5, and The CW, 1.2.

"Lie to Me," 5.1/9, won a quiet 8 o'clock hour for FOX. A "Law & Order" rerun, 3.8/7, put NBC in second, just ahead of repeats of "Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried" on CBS. ABC took fourth with "Scrubs," 3.1/5, and "Better Off Ted," 2.8/5. "America's Next Top Model" earned a 2.7/5 for The CW.

"American Idol" ruled at 9 p.m., scoring a 13.7/21 as it eliminated two finalists, Lil Rounds and Anoop Desai. A "Criminal Minds" encore on CBS delivered a 6.4/10. A "Lost" clip show, 4.2/7, moved ABC ahead of NBC's "Law & Order: SVU" rerun, 3.8/6. The CW aired a "90210" repeat.

A new "Criminal Minds," 8.9/15, carried CBS to the top at 10 p.m. A second "Law & Order" on NBC (4.3/7) beat out "The Unusuals," 3.3/6, on ABC.

TV ratings: CBS and ABC split Thursday
'CSI' is the night's most-watched show, 'Grey's Anatomy' wins demo

April 24, 2009

Fast National ratings for Thursday, April 23, 2009

The first night of sweeps was a busy one, with all the networks returning to original programming. It was not, however, a hugely watched night.

CBS led the overall race with a 7.0 rating/12 share, beating out ABC's 6.2/10. FOX came in third with a 4.8/8. NBC, 4.3/7, finished fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1/9/3.

ABC topped the adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.2. CBS was right behind at 3.1. NBC took third at 2.7, followed by FOX, 2.6, and The CW, 1.2.

"Survivor: Tocantins" scored a 6.9/12 to give CBS the lead at 8 p.m. "Bones," 5.4/9, finished second for FOX. A "Grey's Anatomy" rerun on ABC tied NBC's "My Name Is Earl," 3.5/6, and "Parks and Recreation," 3.4/6, in households, but NBC snagged a few more total viewers. "Smallville" recorded a 2.0/3 for The CW.

CBS held the overall lead at 9 thanks to "CSI," 9.2/14. "Grey's Anatomy" drew an 8.8/14 for ABC (and was the night's top show in the 18-49 demo). "Hell's Kitchen" drew a 4.3/7 for FOX, edging "The Office," 4.4/7, and "30 Rock," 3.9/6, on NBC. The CW's "Supernatural" fell off a little bit from its lead-in.

"Private Practice," 6.4/11, moved ABC to the top spot at 10. The increased competition meant a ratings dip for NBC's "Southland" (5.3/9), but the cop show still beat "Harper's Island," 5.0/9, on CBS.

olddude - do you mean the Alaska Experiment? We had to fast forward past the scenes of how to gut a gopher. It went on and on. Something you don't see on Survivor, that's for sure. So far it's an interesting, somewhat pleasant diversion. But 2 of the 3 that opted out, were a surprise. A real surprise. The older man who had trouble hiking to the next camp, we knew he'd check out at some point. But the other two? Shocked they'd leave the "game".....I'm not clear on what's in store for them at the end? Winning anything? Or just personal satisfaction they survived out in the Alaskan wilderness?

Yep, "Out of the Wild, the Alaska Experiment". I'm not sure what to make of the show. As a preparedness devotee I just shake my head at some of the mistakes the group has made. As a realist I know that the editing can make any situation appear any way the producers want. Still...to attend a 3 day survival course prior to the show and then be unable to start a fire with magnesium and a ferrochrome rod is hard to imagine. Still it is entertaining in an odd sort of way and I will continue watching.

The Supreme Court ruled that the FCC could punish broadcast networks even when a single curse word was uttered on live television.

In a 5-4 decision issued on Tuesday, the court said that it did not find the FCC's policy on so-called "fleeting expletives" either "arbitrary or capricious," dealing a blow to the networks efforts to scuttle the policy.

The case was the first ruling on indecency standards in more than 30 years.

"American Idol" kept FOX in the top ratings spot Tuesday, but CBS and its dramas made things interesting.

FOX led the night with a 9.7 rating/15 share and 16.58 million viewers, beating the 9.5/15 and 15.19 million viewers for CBS. NBC finished third at 6.4/10. ABC, 5.3/8, came in fourth, and The CW was way back in fifth, drawing a 1.2/2.

Disney joins Hulu website, taking ownership stake
Thu Apr 30, 2009 11:35am EDT

(Reuters) - Walt Disney Co has reached a deal to become a partner in the popular Hulu video website founded by NBC Universal and News Corp, the media company said on Thursday.

Disney had been in talks with General Electric Co's NBC Universal and News Corp for some time about joining Hulu, and negotiations had picked up in recent weeks, sources have said. A deal will add full-length episodes of TV shows from its ABC broadcast network like "Lost," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Desperate Housewives" to the site.

Disney is the only other media company to join as an equity partner, taking an ownership stake along with NBC Universal, News Corp, Providence Equity Partners and employees. While other media companies provide content to the website, none hold an equity stake.

Disney, which will gain three seats on the Hulu board, has sought to expand viewership of the ad-supported ABC shows offered on ABC.com and Web sites of its local TV affiliates, on AOL.com, and Comcast Corp's Fancast site.

ABC was the first major broadcast network to offer prime time programing online, while Disney also sells movies and TV episodes on Apple Inc's iTunes.

TV ratings: No Obama pays off (a little) for FOX Wednesday
'Lie to Me' not huge, but it beats president's news conference

April 30, 2009

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, April 29, 2009

FOX's decision not to air President Obama's news conference Wednesday worked out OK for the network -- though maybe not as much as it was hoping, as "Lie to Me" didn't get a ratings bump.

FOX averaged an 8.9 rating/14 share for the night, easily beating the 6.8/11 for second-place CBS. ABC, 4.4/7, narrowly beat NBC, 4.3/7, for third (ABC, CBS and NBC all carried the news conference and will see their numbers change some). The CW came in at 1.8/3.

In the adults 18-49 demographic, FOX's 5.0 rating nearly doubled CBS' 2.6. ABC, 2.4, finished third, followed by NBC, 1.7, and The CW, 1.2.

"Lie to Me" drew a 4.8/8 for FOX at 8 p.m. -- better than what the network typically gets when it covers news events (to say nothing of ad revenue not Lost), but just about equal with last week's episode. NBC, 4.4/7, drew the biggest broadcast audience for the White House press conference, followed by ABC and CBS. "America's Next Top Model" scored a 2.6/4 for The CW.

FOX got a 13.0/20 from "American Idol" at 9. "Criminal Minds," 8.4/13, moved CBS into second place. "Lost," 5.5/8, came in third for ABC, topping the 3.4/5 for a "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" rerun on NBC. The CW ran a "90210" repeat.

"CSI: NY," 8.1/14, led the 10 p.m. hour for CBS. "Law & Order" earned a 5.1/9 for NBC, while "The Unusuals" dipped to 3.4/6 on ABC.

CBS and ABC split the night's ratings title

CBS averaged a 7.8 rating/13 share in primetime, beating out ABC' 7.0/11. FOX came in third with a 4.9/8. NBC, 3.9/6, finished fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.9/3.

The adults 18-49 title went to ABC, which scored a 3.5 rating in the advertisers' favorite demo. CBS took second at 3.2. FOX and NBC tied for third at 2.5, and The CW earned a 1.3.

"Survivor: Tocantins" put CBS on top at 8 with a 7.1/12. "Bones," 5.5/9, grabbed second for FOX. The return of "Ugly Betty" drew a modest 4.7/9 for ABC, but that was good enough to beat the 3.4/6 average for "My Name Is Earl" and "Parks and Recreation" on NBC. The CW's "Smallville" trailed.

"CSI" grabbed the night's biggest audience at 9 p.m., scoring a 9.6/15. "Grey's Anatomy" was close behind at 9.4/15 and led the hour in adults 18-49. "Hell's Kitchen" came in third for FOX. "The Office," 4.4/7, and "30 Rock," 3.6/6, kept NBC in fourth. "Supernatural" drew a 1.8/3 for The CW.

The season finale of ABC's "Private Practice," 6.8/12, led in households and adults 18-49 at 10 p.m., but a "Criminal Minds" rerun, 6.7/11, drew more viewers to CBS. "Southland" slid some more, scoring a 4.3/7 for NBC.

UPDATE: NBC Renews 'Chuck', 'Medium', 'Law & Order'; Announcement On Monday
That's what sources are telling me. Expect a major renewals announcement from NBC on Monday (unless the bosses decide to mess with our heads)

*still trying to figure out the renewal of Southland and Parks and Recreation*

Southland was reportedly renewed already or so I heard. It's ratings have fell every week, Thursday was it's worst performance as it was a distant third and pathetic.

I'm wondering where NBC is going to put all these shows if the rumors are true. They don't have room with only 10 hours to program and plus new shows will be coming in as well. Chuck doesn't deserve to be back and neither does Parks and Recreation. NBC is in distant 4th place and they need to make some big changes, bringing back low-rated shows isn't the answer.

Tonight: New episodes of Desperate Housewives, Brothers and Sisters, The Amazing Race, Cold Case, The Unit, Celebrity Apprentice, The Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and American Dad

Sunday's ratings are delayed likely until tomorrow due to a Nielsen problem(blah), FOX has renewed Fringe for a full season, and NBC had it's "infront" this morning when it announced pickups for next season but not a full schedule(that will come the week of May 18th when ABC/CBS/FOX and The CW also announce their schedules).

Fourth-place NBC, handing off five hours of prime time to Jay Leno this fall, unveiled an ambitious slate of six new scripted series to advertisers Monday in a bid to turn around the network's declining fourth-place performance.

Among newcomers to the schedule are family dramedy Parenthood, a remake of Ron Howard's 1989 hit film, produced by Howard and starring Peter Krause (Six Feet Under, Dirty Sexy Money) and Maura Tierney (ER) in the lead roles.

Other new dramas include Day One, about the aftermath of a global catastrophe, and a pair of medical series. Trauma is about San Francisco paramedics, produced by Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights), and Mercy, a soapier series, looks at the medical genre through the eyes of a hospital's nursing staff.

The network's two new comedies are Community, starring Joel McHale (E!'s The Soup) as one of a band of misfits at a community college, and 100 Questions, which asks and answers queries about love by a woman who has yet to meet Mr. Right, in concert with her dating counselor.

"We're picking up more programs than last year and are more committed to scripted (series) than ever before, even with Leno filling the 10 p.m. time slot," says entertainment co-chairman Ben Silverman.

NBC has not specified which of the series will be unveiled for fall and which will wait until midseason, when Sunday nights are freed up after the NFL season.

Day One, a 13-episode "event series," will premiere following the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Also still unclear: Which of a handful of borderline series will be dropped to make room for the new crop. Though NBC confirmed plans to renew new drama Southland and Amy Poehler's comedy Parks and Recreation, which premiered in April, the fates of Chuck, Medium and My Name Is Earl won't be revealed until May 19, when NBC is due to announce its full schedule, including timeslots.

Heroes also was officially renewed, but for as few as 18 episodes (vs. 25 this season), and Law & Order— still awaiting a formal pickup — is expected back at least for a partial season.

Also still in the running is a law drama from David E. Kelley, Legally Mad, whose fate, in a dealmaking maneuver, is tied to Chuck's.

Other returnees, announced earlier, include The Office, 30 Rock, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Friday Night Lights and reality series The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Apprentice.

NBC's ratings are down this year, along with most of its rivals', even as the network carried a record-breaking Super Bowl and faces easy comparisons with last year's strike-damaged numbers. But executives acknowledge that Leno's new show, scheduled to keep the late-night host from defecting and to save on programming costs, isn't likely to prevail over dramas on competing networks.

NBC also ordered at least six more prime-time Saturday Night Live specials, due again on Thursdays this fall. Leno's show will debut at 10 p.m. ET/PT in the second week of September.
