LOS ANGELES (AP) - A family spokesman for Bea Arthur says the star of TV's "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" has died.
Spokesman Dan Watt says the 86-year-old Arthur died at home early Saturday. He says Arthur had cancer, but he declined to give further details.
The tall, deep-voiced actress won a Tony Award for the musical "Mame" and Emmy Awards for "The Golden Girls" and "Maude." Arthur's razor-sharp delivery of comedy lines helped make the sitcoms hits and turned the veteran stage and film actress into a popular TV star.
Arthur first appeared as the character Maude in the 1970s landmark comedy series "All in the Family," making guest appearances as the loudly outspoken, liberal in-law of blue-collar bigot Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor)

i loved her so much on Golden Girls
Inicdentally, the lady who played her mom on that show died last year in July...and she was actually about the same age as Bea...which is amazing, since she really did look much older than "dorothy"

I had just caught that over at the Washington Post - she was such a good actress! Justin, that's amazing - I didn't know that "Dorothy" and "Sophia" were the same age - they sure did a good make-up job with "Sophia'!

RIP Maude/Dorothy.
Dorothy could always put Blanche in her place. Very similar to how Maude could always put Archie in his place.
Bea was fantastic. May she RIP. I liked Bea on both but liked her the most on Maude.
Maude trivia:
1) Does anyone remember the only way that Maude's hubby, Walter, could take any control over Maude? Hint: it was a two word command.
2) Anyone remember the Hattie Flannigan funeral episode? During it, there was a famous song that played at the funeral home. Anyone remember what it was?

I loved Maude and when Bea Arthur appeared on "All in the Family". I saw bits of the "Golden Girls" over the years.
Great actress! May she rest in peace.

1) "Maude, sit!"
2) "The Girl from Ipanema"
