SLOSH Model Upgrades for 2009

#1 Postby wxman57 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 12:23 pm

I attended a SLOSH presentation by Dr. Will Shaffer of the Meteorological Development Lab:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/mdl/marine/eval ... hp?L=2&T=2

Dr. Shaffer says the new version of SLOSH is nearly complete. It will be ready for downloading somewhere at the link above in June. Here are some improvements:

1. Higher resolution - each grid square of all SLOSH basins will be subdivided into 4 areas, quadrupling the resolution of the model

2. All SLOSH basins are being re-analyzed using LIDAR mapping to get the correct topography of each basin.

3. There will be a toggle for either an "average" or "large" storm size for each SS category.

4. There will be a toggle to show the display either in height above MSL or to show actual projected inundation depth. This way, you'll be able to zoom in to your lat/lon and see how high the water might get.

I'll be checking in with him in June to see if/when the updated SLOSH model is ready.

Will SLOSH model results be viewable on the interweb by us civilians?

MEOWs and MOMs (Maximum Envelope Of Water and Maximum of MEOW) will be posted on the NHC web page when the storms are 5 days from landfall. But you can download the SLOSH program and run your own if you want. Deterministic runs (a run using the actual forecast track) will be posted on the NHC web page 36 hours prior to landfall, as they were with Ike.

I did not know that. I have seen worst case MEOWS for supposed Saffir-Simpson categories on some web site (maybe Harris or Galveston County or regional EMS), but I was completely unaware storm specific runs could be found at the NHC site.

Learn something new every day.

OT Alert
Do you have a feel on SETX severe for tomorrow, BTW?

You can download that? I know the track graphics are available on the NHC page, but not the SLOSH program itself.

Dr. Shaffer did mention downloading the SLOSH program online in June. He also said Gene Hafele (Houston/Galveston NWS MIC) requested 100 CDs of the updated program. I'll check with them in June to see if there's a link for downloading it.

SLOSH is really a simple program. It is mostly a stored database of pre-defined SLOSH basins with maps to match all storm types. There's a way to actually put in a real-time forecast track, but I've never figured out how. May have to manually create a ".rex" file with notepad and import it.
