HURDAT updated 1921-1925

#1 Postby Hurricanehink » Fri Mar 20, 2009 4:36 pm

http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/data_sub/re_anal.html

A complete reanalysis was conducted for the years of 1921 to 1925. All 27 tropical storms and hurricanes of the era were revised in track and intensity (with one in 1923 removed from HURDAT). 10 new tropical cyclones were added for these five years. Most significant hurricanes of this era were the 1921 Tampa Bay hurricane that struck as a Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale Category 3, the 1922 Bermuda hurricane that struck the Bermuda islands as a Category 3, and the 1924 Cuba hurricane that struck as a Category 5 (and is now the first recorded Category 5 hurricane in the database). Co-authors on the reanalyses for 1921 to 1925 are Steve Feuer, Ramon Perez Suarez, Ricardo Prieto, and Jorge Sanchez-Sesma. Special thanks also to James Belanger, Auguste Boissonnade, Emery Boose, Cristina Carrasco, Michael Chenoweth, Gil Clark, Jose Colon, Joan David, Neal Dorst, John Gamache, Daniel Gladstein, Mark Guishard, Mark Jelinek, Cary Mock, Charlie Neumann, Adrian Santiago, and the NHC Best Track Change Committee (Jack Beven - chair, Lixion Avila, Eric Blake, Hugh Cobb, Richard Pasch, and Colin McAdie [past-member]).

As expected the 1924 Cuba hurricane becomes the earliest cat-5 hurricane recorded, many expected that change to occur on this board so its not surprising its happened.

No surprise on the 1924 storm. When they get to 1932, the November storm that year should be bumped to at least 140 kt as well (my guess is 145 kt, since it might have been weakening as it was coming in).

Of course, there are older storms out there that may have reached Category 5 without any observations available as well. (I would have upgraded the 1919 storm that hit the Keys to Category 5 after it left, thinking that it continued strengthening as it entered the Loop Current)

Interesting stuff. The 1924 Cuba Hurricane is a Category 5 hurrcae, making it the earliest recorded. I think there were Category 5 hurricanes beforehand, like the 1919 Florida Keys Hurricane, Indianola Hurricane of 1886, 1893 Cheniere Caminada Hurricane, 1893 Sea Islands Hurricane, and Great 1780 Hurricane.
