I know - - we just don't have any rain here yet. At all.
Stan hasn't shown up here yet as far as I can see, and he was very scarce
on TWC the last half year anyway. When's the last time you talked with him?
I heard the mistake on TWC too a few minutes ago and did a double-take...

rain would be great... but

#10 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Fri Jul 25, 2003 2:44 pm

#1 flooding and mudslides will be an issue, and #2 rain accompanied by frequent lightning is still sometimes not good. To makes matters worse, most of the storms in the inner mountain west are dry thunderstorms. So dry lightning will just cause more fires. The fire count as of last night puts the # of active acres burned up to nearly 380,000 acres and climbing fast..

Once The Monsoon

#12 Postby Aslkahuna » Fri Jul 25, 2003 5:06 pm

gets going in AZ, the risk of dry thunderstorms tends to shift west and north as big monsoon thunderstorms are usually anything but dry-in fact they can be as wet as thunderstorms anywhere else (and as severe). Our biggest problem through August in those areas now getting rain will be flash flooding, damaging winds, large hail and, yes, even the possibility of tornadoes.

It appears from Avra Vallley..about 10nm to my NNW on I-10 a possible Tornado wreaked some dam impressive damage..F-1 max..and winds over 100mph sustained..still trying to get a handle on the situation.I drove out there earlier..I saw what was NOT a straightline wind event..nor microburst..most likely a 'Gustnado' from the report.However..I interviewed 4 residents..each recounting a 'Lightning Illuminated Funnel' approx 30 -50 yrds in diameter.Damage concurs with small vortex ground sig.

Ariz - go read my post under Aslkahuna's Monsoon thread....

The only thing I heard tonight on a couple news channels from Phx was
that Tuc had a large microburst and they televised video of the houses
& poles down...all in a straight line, no circular pattern from what they
showed. We'll have to see what NWS officially calls it - tornado or m.b.
According to NWS Phx, tornadoes occur mostly in winter here and not too
often with summer monsoon storms - but they do cause large and numerous
microbursts. Besides the lightning & flash flooding (when it rains, dang it),
microbursts are the worst side effect of the 'Soon. Hell, we'd take about
anything now within the definition of 'Weather' - be it rain, snow, sleet,
tornado, gale, hail - heck - just get it up here. This is really pathetic and
disgusting from Phoenix's point of view. We need cheering up...

That Video

#15 Postby Aslkahuna » Sat Jul 26, 2003 2:31 am

on the news was from Thursday night's storm and not tonight's. Phoenix may get most of its tornadoes in the Winter, but all of Arizona's tornado fatalities have occurred around Tucson and have occurred during the monsoon. In September as the monsoon comes to an end, it interacts with the westerlies and the result can be awe inspiring. I have seen rotation here in the Winter, but except for the May 1993 tornado on the East Range of the Post all of the 10 or so tornadoes that I have seen or heard about either in Cochise County or Tucson have occurred in July, August and September-except also for one that I videotaped in October.
Tonight, my son had some concerns as the storm roared through Tucson and he specifically mentioned that he thought he saw rotation to the NW.

Actually, all of the tornadoes I've seen in Arizona have been during the
summer months too...it must just be Phx then. I'm used to So.Az weather, and know they get tornadoes in summer but FoHeNix may get them more in winter. There was one up in Fountain Hills this past February. I watched your storms on radar tonight and they were impressive til they hit the heat sink....so anything's possible. I'll have to read the reports. We had a breeze for a short time - now all is quiet. No rain.

Upcoming?

#17 Postby M2 » Sat Jul 26, 2003 3:24 pm

NWS has us progged down here for a 50%-70% change of rain today thru
Monday so as Azskyman said, maybe we can dust off our devices and
see some H20 this summer. Do you guys down South have any links that
discuss the storms from last night? I just checked Sierra Vista Hearald,
KVOA, KOLD, KVOA, AZ Daily Star.... Only saw the hail & wind reports on
the Tucson NWS site. How does it look this afternoon down there up high??

And Dennis - what's going on up there today...Looking good or what?
