Question for the Board regulars...
What is the definition of SAL? I have seen the term a few times. I do not know what it means. Thanks!

The SAL is the Saharan Air Layer ... or a layer of dry air usually between 10ºN-20ºN in the Atlantic ... and usually will contain African dust as well ... the SAL is typically unfavorable for TC's to develop due to dry air and sometimes the dust, and TC's that usually embedded in these areas are usually held in check ... such as may have been the case with Tropical Depression #6, when it seems everything was a go for it to strengthen ...

Right now, the SAL is quite strong across the Atlantic.
