TV Ratings: CBS Holds Off ABC Wednesday
'Dancing' results boost ABC's numbers, 'Law & Order' premiere soft

November 6, 2008

Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008

NBC's reworked Wednesday lineup didn't give much a boost to the network's fortunes on the night, which once again saw CBS score a ratings win.

CBS averaged a 7.2 rating/11 share in primetime, narrowly beating ABC's 7.0/11. FOX came in third with a 5.3/8. NBC, 4.1/7, came in fourth, and The CW trailed at 2.0/3.

FOX grabbed the top spot among adults 18-49 with a 3.0 rating, with CBS, 2.9, and ABC, 2.8, right behind. NBC managed only a 1.9 as it finished fourth. The CW drew a 1.5.

The "Dancing with the Stars" results show, 10.2/16, easily won the 8 p.m. hour for ABC. The return of "Bones" from baseball hiatus scored a 6.2/10 for FOX. "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Gary Unmarried" put CBS in third. NBC's "Knight Rider" had its worst outing of the fall, drawing a 3.3/5. "America's Next Top Model" posted a 2.6/4 for The CW.

CBS took the lead at 9 p.m. with "Criminal Minds," 9.3/14. "Private Practice," 6.4/10, took second for ABC. A "House" rerun, 4.3/7, topped the Wednesday debut of "Life," 3.7/6, on NBC. "Stylista" brought up the rear for The CW.

"CSI: NY," 7.9/13, kept CBS on top at 10 p.m. The season premiere of "Law & Order," 5.3/9, was well of its average from last season but at least improved significantly on its lead-in. "Dirty Sexy Money" earned a 4.3/7 for ABC.

Fox is making some major midseason moves, shifting “House” to Mondays and “Bones” to Thursdays.

In addition, the network is giving first-year drama “Fringe” a major boost by scheduling it behind the Tuesday night edition of “American Idol.” New drama “Lie to Me” also will get an “Idol” lead-in, landing behind the Wednesday edition of the reality powerhouse.

Not getting “Idol”-ized: Joss Whedon’s “Dollhouse,” which will air Fridays at 9 p.m. starting Feb. 13. Its lead-in will be “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” which is shifting from Mondays to Fridays.

Other elements for Fox’s winter schedule include “Hell’s Kitchen,” which is set to air on Thursday nights, and “Hole in the Wall,” which is relocating to Sundays at 7.

Fox’s midseason kicks off with the previously announced two-night premiere of “24” on Jan. 11-12 from 8-10 p.m. each night. It continues with the four-hour, two-night premiere of “Idol” on Jan. 13-14.

“Idol” is staying put on Tuesday and Wednesdays.

Fox’s new Thursday lineup premieres Jan. 15, with “Bones” at 8. “Hell’s Kitchen” debuts its new season Jan. 29 at 9 p.m.

After a brief hiatus, “Fringe” makes its post-“Idol” bow Jan. 20 at 9 p.m. “Lie to Me” premieres Jan. 21, also at 9 p.m.

As for “House,” it moves to Mondays at 8 on Jan. 19, with “24” settling into its regular 9 p.m. time slot the same night.

Fox will stick with unscripted shows on Fridays through mid-February. On Feb. 13, “Terminator” and “Dollhouse” begin airing at 8 and 9 p.m., respectively.

"Grey's Anatomy" scored some of its best ratings of the season Thursday, but they weren't enough to overtake CBS and win the night.

CBS averaged an 8.5 rating/14 share for the night, beating out ABC's 7.3/12. NBC took third with a 4.7/7. FOX, 2.9/5, narrowly beat The CW, 2.6/4, for fourth.

"Survivor: Gabon" gave CBS the lead at 8 p.m. with a 7.3/11. "Ugly Betty" drew a 5.8/9 for ABC. "My Name Is Earl," 4.0/6, and "Kath & Kim," 3.4/5, put NBC in third. "Smallville" earned a 2.9/5 for The CW, beating FOX's "Kitchen Nightmares" by a small margin.

"CSI," 11.2/17, had the night's biggest overall audience at 9 p.m., but "Grey's Anatomy," 10.1/15, drew better adults 18-49 numbers. "The Office," 4.7/7, and "30 Rock," 4.6/7, held onto third for NBC. A second hour of "Kitchen Nightmares," 3.0/5, moved FOX ahead of The CW and "Supernatural."

At 10 p.m., "Eleventh Hour" scored a 7.1/12 to complete the CBS sweep. ABC's "Life on Mars," 6.0/10, topped NBC's "ER," 5.7/10, for second.

Loved Lynette giving the smackdown to Anne Schilling, and then she just kept going. Did not see the pregnancy twist coming.

Loved the twist with the sex tape and Andrew's comment about them needing stuff names, and the YouTube mention.

Susan/Jackson was boring but touching at the end.

Still don't know what the old lady is up to with Gablos.

LOVED McCluskey and her sister. Hilarious.

and I have no idea what's going on with Dave's doc but I think it's obvious the name "Dave Williams" is an alias. The doc acted like the name wasn't familiar but flipped out when he tied it to Fairview.

TV Ratings: Peyton, Eli Manning Score Sunday
CBS and NBC both get a boost from NFL games

November 10, 2008

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008

NFL games involving the Manning brothers were ratings winners Sunday, with Peyton helping CBS grab the overall title and little brother Eli fueling NBC's demographic victory.

CBS averaged a 9.2 rating/14 share for the night, beating out NBC's 8.3/13 (both networks' final numbers will change when the live sports telecasts are factored in). ABC, 6.9/11, came in third. FOX took fourth with a 4.0/6, while a night of repeats on The CW drew a miniscule 0.4/1.

NBC led among adults 18-49 with a 4.9 rating. ABC and CBS tied for second in the key demographic with a 3.8. FOX was not far back at 3.2. The CW came in at 0.2.

The end of Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers combined with "60 Minutes" for a 13.2/21 at 7 p.m. NBC's "Football Night in America," 4.6/7, was second in households, but "America's Funniest Home Videos," 4.3/7, brought a few more total viewers to ABC. Repeats of "King of the Hill" and "The Simpsons" put FOX in fourth, well ahead of "In Harm's Way" on The CW.

NBC's "Sunday Night Football," featuring Eli Manning's New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, scored a 9.2/14 at 8 p.m. CBS averaged 8.8/13 with the conclusion of "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race." ABC got a 6.4/10 from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." "The Simpsons," 4.7/7, and "King of the Hill," 4.0/6, kept FOX in fourth. The CW went with "Valentine."

At 9 p.m., the Giants-Eagles game and ABC's "Desperate Housewives" tied for the lead at 10.0/15 (and were separated by fewer than 50,000 total viewers). "The Amazing Race" and "Cold Case" scored a 7.5/11 for CBS, beating out "Family Guy," 5.2/8, and "American Dad," 4.1/6, on FOX.

NBC reclaimed sole possession of first at 10 p.m. as the game posted a 9.5/16. "Cold Case" and "The Unit" drew a 7.2/12 for CBS, edging the 6.9/11 for "Brothers & Sisters" on ABC.

DH was definitley good last night. I have once again become a little interested in it. Definitely did not see that pregnancy coming or Mike on the sex tape either. Meanwhile B & S is becoming too bizarre in some ways-maybe in my old age it is too hard to follow so many story lines back to back between the two shows.

LOL, I found B&S boring last night. I really just do not care about Ryan, I still hate the writers for dewalkering Rebecca(and this Ryan thing just seems so recycled), last night I found Kitty and Robert very annoying, and I don't like Justin/Rebecca's relationship. It's just weird and disturbing.

feel the same about Kitty and Robert(and my wife finds her very annoying!). Yep the Ryan thing is so btdt that it bugs me. Needs something really new to spice it up imo. New writers maybe?

ABC doctors its schedule
'Practice' behind 'Grey's'; 'Mars' to follow 'Lost'

By James Hibberd

ABC has some intriguing scheduling experiments planned for early next year.

Sources say "Private Practice" will get a chance to shine at 10 p.m Thursdays behind the "Grey's Anatomy" mothership.

And the slightly trippy, time-traveling new drama "Life on Mars" will get a trial behind the seriously trippy, and possibly time-traveling, drama "Lost" at 10 p.m. Wednesdays.

When "Practice" was first announced, most assumed it would launch behind "Grey's." But the network wanted to try and spread the powerhouse brand to another night, and some suspected two hours from the same dramatic universe on Thursday might be a bit trying for fans. Plus, it kept the post-"Grey's" slot free to try and launch other new shows with less brand recognition.

Now, with "Practice" having eroded in the ratings somewhat midweek and the two medical dramas planning multiepisode crossover story lines for the February sweep, pairing the two shows for a Seattle Grace alums block makes more sense.

"Mars" and "Lost" also seem like a potentially satisfied couple. "Life" is the more down-to-earth of the pair, yet the two have enough mutual fantastical elements. (As previously announced, "Lost" is going into "Practice's" 9 p.m. Wednesday slot in January).

No word when this will be announced or whether the scheduling will be billed as a temporary trial for the shows or as their new regular time periods.

ABC has made some bold scheduling moves in the recent past. The network successfully launched three new dramas on Wednesday night last year and put "Grey's Anatomy" against titan "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation."

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/con ... 199f34fe70

FutonCritic has the first look at the ABC mid-season schedule but it says that it is subject to change. But here is their first look:

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC is gearing up for a major overhaul to its primetime schedule, including new homes for "Private Practice" and "Life on Mars."

The proposed changes - which include the additions of "Border Security USA," "Scrubs" and "Here Come the Newlyweds" - began making the rounds in the advertising community this afternoon.

It's believed a final schedule will be unveiled as early as tomorrow morning.

Here's a breakdown of the aforementioned lineup, which would take effect by the end of January:

Mondays
8:00/7:00c - "The Bachelor" (New Season)
9:30/8:30c - "Samantha Who?"
10:00/9:00c - "True Beauty" (New Series)

Tuesdays
8:00/7:00c - "Border Security USA" (New Series)
9:00/8:00c - "According to Jim" (New Season)
9:30/8:30c - "According to Jim" (New Season)
10:00/9:00c - "Eli Stone"

Wednesdays
8:00/7:00c - "Scrubs" (New Season)
8:30/7:30c - "Scrubs" (New Season)
9:00/8:00c - "Lost" (New Season)
10:00/9:00c - "Life on Mars" (New Time Slot)

Thursdays
8:00/7:00c - "Ugly Betty"
9:00/8:00c - "Grey's Anatomy"
10:00/9:00c - "Private Practice" (New Time Slot)

Fridays
8:00/7:00c - "Wife Swap"
9:00/8:00c - "Here Come the Newlyweds" (New Season)
10:00/9:00c - "20/20"

Saturdays
8:00/7:00c - "Saturday Night Movie"

Sundays
7:00/6:00c - "America's Funniest Home Videos"
8:00/7:00c - "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition"
9:00/8:00c - "Desperate Housewives"
10:00/9:00c - "Brothers & Sisters"

It's assumed that current Wednesday entries "Pushing Daisies" and "Dirty Sexy Money" will sign off at 13 episodes while "Supernanny" will rejoin the lineup after "Newlyweds" completes its second season.

Due in the spring then are newcomers "Better Off Ted," "Castle," "Cupid," "The Goode Family" and "The Unusuals."

Again, keep in mind the above schedule has yet to be confirmed.

CBS and FOX split the Nielsen pie once again

Fast National ratings for Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008

Naval Cops and salty docs ruled the ratings once again Tuesday, as CBS and FOX each took a share of the night's Nielsen title.

CBS led the overall race with a 9.8 rating/15 share. ABC finished second at 7.6/12, beating out FOX's 6.5/10. NBC, 5.4/8, was fourth, and The CW trailed with a 1.7/3.

"Fringe" earned a 5.3/8 for FOX, edging the second hour of "The Biggest Loser," 5.2/8, on NBC. The CW's "Privileged" fell off a little from its lead-in.

At 10 p.m., CBS' "Without a Trace" scored an 8.0/13 to beat out "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," 6.3/10, on NBC. ABC's "Eli Stone" came in at 4.9/8.

I don't get how Zucker still has a job. When he took over NBC 8 years ago they ruled television with no one even close, now they are competing with the CW?! He has run the network into the ground since 2004, and it'll get much worse once football is over. Their highest-rated non-sports shows get a 10 share?! and worse both of them premiered in the 90's and one(ER) is ending in the spring. It used to get 30 million viewers every week.
