Some claims that KHOU reported FEMA has taken over cell coverage in the region. I have no idea if that is even possible or how that would work, so if anyone knows anything about that please share.

The military/US Gov't has the tools to shut down cell phone communications. It would be an efficient tool in electronic warfare. Whether what KHOU is saying is true, I'm wouldn't know.

That was from the news conference this afternoon reported on Houston TV.

I realize how very, very frustrated everyone who has been affected by Ike are feeling but the finger pointing is reprehensible in my mind. The first responders, FEMA, state and local governments have to be trying to do everything they can to give assistance. Most of them are there because they want to help. Much like any tragedy there is triage in place and they are trying to multi-task as much as possible from everything I have heard. They are being hindered by flooding, impassible roads, lack of electricity, etc. and generally are not working in the best of circumstances. Kudos to all of these people who are doing what they can to help others.

Had people heeded the evacuation warnings much of this would be unnecessary now. Also, when told to evacuate or evacuate in place you are also told to have on hand or bring your supplies with you including enough food and water, medical and baby supplies for at least 72 hours with you. So, rhetorically, why after 36 hours are people up in arms that they don't have food and water? I know there are extenuating circumstances and don't mean to sound hard-hearted, but it is not as if this were a sudden occurrence such as a tornado. It seems as if there were plenty of warnings for those on the barrier islands and in flood prone areas to take the necessary precautions. I also realize that there were areas hit which were far enough inland to not expect the devastation they are experiencing.

That said: God bless all involved-victims and responders alike. This is truly a tragedy.

KHOU said their pool helicopter would have had to go high enough over the west end because of the emergency craft at lower heights that they would start to have visibility problems that wouldn't let them fly safely there for now.

What really makes me sick is that EVERYONE should have learned from Hurricane Katrina. Everyone was quick to jump on the way that Hurricane Katrina was handled and you think that lessons would have been learned.

It's sad when you see three years later the same set up. FEMA and Gov't fighting and a mayor (Galveston) who seems totally clueless at what really matters.

I just hope that finally after the smoke clears that everyone on the Gulf Coast can learn and REMEMBER the mistakes made.

Back to NFL Football.

:rarrow: A day or two ago someone questioned what types of warnings/advisories would be issued if Ike's remnants did what the GFDL previously indicated (i.e., develop hurricane-force winds in the Great Lakes region).

This afternoon there have been numerous near-hurricane or hurricane-force wind gusts recorded across the Ohio Valley region and as I mentioned would happen, High Wind Warnings would be the warning/advisory of choice.

Eitherway, Ike's remnants are still very impressive and are producing winds comparable to a moderate to strong derecho. Boone County, Kentucky, registered a measured 74-mph gust this afternoon. 60 to 73 mph gusts have also been widespread across parts of Kentucky through Ohio with widespread damage to trees, powerlines, and roofs. Here are some of the more severe reports from NWSFO Paducah, KY:

If that's Seawolf Park on Pelican Island that's a permanent display.

11 counties in Middle TN have reported some type of wind damage. Bowling Green, KY (South Central KY) had an estimated wind gust of around 50 mph. That's quite impressive from a tropical system this far inland.

That's nothing compared to farther north and west. Some areas have had sustained winds higher than that and Category 1 wind gusts.

Galleria Mall at I610 and Westheimer is open with air conditioning operating. A good place to visit if you live in west Houston and have no power.
