One thing that will be a small help to the millions dealing with power outages (obviously not those who lose their homes, etc)....but much cooler and dryer weather will move into the houston area monday. Lows around 60 monday night will make lack of a/c at least more tolerable than a low of 78 and dewpoint to match.

im at cvg cincinnati. tower evacuated, winds peaked at 40 gusts to 75 which required tower evac. no rains but very high winds. roof peeling off delta hanger.

i can not even imagine how bad hurricane winds would be.

At a news conference just now, officals said 3 dead on Galveston Island but most of the west end is still under water. They are going house to house. They also said there were casulties on Bolivar peninsula but didn't want to discuss pending notification of kin. The bolivar peninula can be reached by ferry from the east end of Galveston Island. It took the brunt of the NE eyewall.

Gusts to 75 mph - is that enough to blow out windows downtown? Louisville also reported gusts to at least 75 mph. Fortunately it is a Sunday afternoon...

30 homes lifted off into the water at the west end of Galveston island. Severe damage. Going door-to-door - survey won't be completed at the earliest tomorrow night.

In Milan Indiana, peak gust so far 82 mph, sustained at 40, multiple roofs off of houses across the county, power out county wide, on generator here. Ike & the cold front are very much alive.

Hope you're ok down that way you guys definitely got the "strong side". Winds have been strong but not like that up here further north.

I'm gonna call some family in Indy and see if there's any trees down or power outages that way.

82 mph is almost as strong as a few areas in Greater Houston (the western suburbs outside the eyewall) saw, although the sustained winds were probably much higher there (probably about 60-70 mph).

Also Cornyn said there are 100 empty buses idling in the parking lot at Tully which should be out rescuing people, and he doesn't understand why this is happening.

controller just informed a holding plane that indy tower has just evac, no report of wind speeds. lexington ky is now taking diverts for smaller aircraft.

as far as i've heard runway gusts have peaked at 55 kts. edit .. runway gusts now at 62 kts

This is something I am only going to mention once, then not again, because it is a very bad thing that I realized and brings up bad memories.

We all know that like 40% of the population on those barrier islands opted to stay, as estimated from emergency personnel and even teh Mayor herself. We all woke to very few pictures and flyby's being shown, except for from high above.

We still are seeing very few aerial shots, unlike Katrina, when we saw many by now of many areas.

There may be a grizzly reason behind that.

You can't show bodies on tv. Joe Public can't see that. Congress can't see blood.

Before any of the footage can get out, it must be prescreened to ensure that they are not going to break the law and show any dead bodies floating.

With all those that stayed behind, with their innocent children, there would be a high likelikhood that some did not make it through the surge.

Haven't read far enough in the thread to see if anyone has corrected you, but there is NO LAW against showing dead bodies floating.

Unless something has changed since I was in the military and tasked with reviewing war photos for release to the press, it is still illegal according to FCC regulations.

However, in the age of the internet, there are rogue photographers and people using cell phones to capture pictures and distribute them, however, it is still illegal. Families could file suit.

Military censorship (i.e., preculling of photos from war zones or preculling of any photos taken by military photographers) is different than U.S. Constitutional law. You certainly CAN take photos of dead bodies and publish them in any way you wish. Dead people have no right of publicity under privacy tort in all states except California, and even if they did, fair use kicks in when the body's demise is newsworthy. Photography isn't even regulated by the FCC, unless it's broadcast over public airwaves. My job involves watching the AP news wire satellite feed every day, and I see a lot of identifiable dead bodies from all over the world, some in configurations that make me ill.

The FCC also does not regulate that one cannot display dead bodies on TV. Even if they did, it certainly would not stop the cable networks. If there were dead bodies floating around in Texas that had been discovered by the media, we'd have seen it by now.

The politicians are starting to talk themselves in circles. Chertoff (to the media) said: "There's deaths on Bolivar but we're having trouble with locating next of kin, so no more info then that." Perry (to the media) said: "There's no deaths on Bolivar. How could you suggest that there are???"

This is a sad report to hear. I haven't found what the strongest wind gust here was, but it was rough. Wind is still blowing a good bit here, with some nice gusts in the mix. Tree limbs and branches down are the big stories here in Middle TN.

This is quite fascinating to watch from a meteorological perspective from my view...not since 1941 can I think of any hurricane-related event producing such strong winds so far north and west...

And yes, sad for those two people who died...just like for everyone else.

That may hurt the recovery in Texas as well since some crews are surely going to have to be called back.
