ATL: IKE Discussion

The issue is not showing bodies.
The issue is that we still have little idea of the total damage in the severely hit areas, for reasons that seems to be spurious. We should have already have had detailed overflights like we had with Katrina and Rita. FEMA has made information control an unnecessarily large component of their relief efforts. There is no reason to completely monopolize cell phone contact with the rest of the world, for instance.

my dad was just telling me about the hazy skies, too. can't figure out what that is, but it must be dust/dirt.

I found a picture of the Poop Deck. Looks like it survived but it clearly went through a tough time.

Anyone have an estimate of total number of homes without electricity throughout the impacted area?
I am really worried that the second stage of disaster is in process, people without electricity, without gasoline for generators, food, ice, etc. are going to be increasingly suffering in the days to come. Houston mayor, Bill White has spoken of holding FEMA accountable for promised distributions, and FEMA is hemming and hawing about distribution points not cleared.
I just heard what sounded like an odd call into KHOU from a FEMA truck driver, claiming to be 60 miles west of Katy, TX and complaining about onlookers, gawkers slowing delivery down.
60 miles west of Katy is rural country, thinly populated with small towns of 2500-appox 5000 people. Something smells fishy here, IMHO, and I have a sinking feeling.

That's just amazing for a system like this!

If he's 60 miles west of Katy, he *could* be on 1-10 itself. And that's about where Weimar is - which is right before Columbus where Hwy 71 joins 1-10. That's one route people coming from Austin going to Houston would take. No telling how many people are trying to take it to get back into Houston. Once 1-10 into Houston backs up from any kind of reason it spreads. But 60 miles does sound like a long way out.
The traffic cams in Houston are all out. But the regional ones are still up - and I don't see stopped traffic. There is one cam broken and pointing down, but the rest are working.

That youtube video does not reveal the amount of damage to Galveston's west end, places like Sea Isle, Terramar, Jamaica Beach, Pirate's Beach etc. I just heard on KHOU a report that in addition to the west end still being flooded, there were piles and piles of debris accumulated from disintegrated houses which was not evident in that youtube video.
It's also apparent that there's an effort to keep the public in the dark concerning the areas of west end, Bolivar, Chrystal Beach, Gilchrist due to next of kin notifications. I do not know if this includes west end because something was said about search and rescue going from east to west. Do not know if this east to west search concerns Galveston city proper or the entire beach front communities in that county.

Shoshana, exactly my point. I can't imagine the people of Weimar standing out on the side of I-10 slowing traffic.

I dunno. That's too far west to have been severely affected and the traffic cams don't seem to show any slowdowns. So I can't quite figure out if he was talking about where he was currently, or if he was talking about in Houston/Galveston/Ike hit area when he dropped off supplies cause he could be going or coming from the Ike hit areas.

they just had the Galveston press conference and it was grim as expected, they announced three dead so far. Clearly they are going to have to go door to door and go inside and see what they find, it wont be something for people with a weak stomach.
They showed people that are now evacuating Galveston island which of course they should have done before but these people looked like refugees from a war zone. Hopefully the media does show this stuff so people learn a lesson for future storms.

MSNBC is the only cable news station covering Ike right now. Very dissapointing for Fox and CNN. I don't know if KHOU is back on the air but I started following http://www.myfoxhoustonlive.com/ last night.
What are the winds like there? I know downstate there are hurricane-force gusts near the Ohio River...

Generator's carbon monoxide kills 4-year-old boy
A 4-year-old boy died Saturday from carbon monoxide poisoning caused by his family's generator, which was inside their north Houston home, police said.
An adult and three other children who were inside the home are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning.
Authorities were called to the 1100 block of Cresline near Parker about 1 p.m. and found Joshua Aguirre and members of his family nonresponsive inside the home, said Houston police spokesman Gabe Ortiz.
``Apparently, the father was at work and could not get a hold of his family and asked a relative to check on them,'' Ortiz said.
The generator was still running near the back door of the one-story home when the relative entered, Ortiz said.
The 4-year-old died at the scene. The names, ages and conditions of his relatives, who were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, were not available.

262,000 have got their power back in Greater Houston according to the Chronicle site. Quite impressive in 24 hours considering there have been storms today there.

The FEMA truck driver is on his way into Houston. I just hope FEMA or those working in conjunction with FEMA aren't trying to make excuses. I am concerned that Houston mayor Bill White thinks that's what's happening.

Just saw on KPRC Channel 2 (NBC) TV out of Houston the Coast Guard Video of the Bolivar Peninsula. Massive destruction with as few as 15% of homes left standing in some neighborhoods along the beach. This story is going to get grim over the next few days - I can't see if anyone stayed behind in these neighborhoods woud be alive.

The Bolivar Peninsula is just up from Galveston Island correct? This area would have been in that right eye wall for a while...any ideas what the surge height ended up being there?
