Even though there were no deaths, Cuba might still request Gustav be retired. I read that Castro said the Isle of Youth looked like somebody dropped an atomic bomb on it.

That reminds me, are there any pictures out of the Isle of Youth to view?

I think Gustav and Hanna will be retired. Too early to tell of course. I am surprised that Gordon was not retired in 1994, when it killed over 1,100 people. That time there was a crisis.

I agree. Hanna is looking like a flooding disaster in Haiti. Latest I heard was 529 dead.

Yeah, I think the death toll could rise. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 claimed at least 3,000 lives in Haiti alone.

Haiti's a member of the RAIV - Hurricane Committee. I don't know if it was in 1994, or maybe they didn't send delegates because of the coup.

If that happens, and since Ike is on the fast track to retirement, it will be the first time ever that three consecutive names on the list are retired in one season...

Ike's a certainty to be retired due to the damage amounts, this will easily be a top 10 most damaging hurricane from the sounds of things and thats not to take into account the flooding that has been occuring in the central/eastern gulf and even south Florida and the Keys must have got some flooding damage.

I'd say Dolly, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike all have means for retirement. So far, I'm only putting money on Gustav and Ike.

Is there any sense in retiring the names of storms? At this rate we're going to run out of names. These are acts of nature, not NFL jersey numbers. And the fact that they determine retirement on the death counts just sounds so wrong to me. It needs to stop, NHC can be spending the time debating retirement on how to make their forecasts better instead.
