Is 2008 a weird season?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is 2008 a weird season?

#1 Postby arkestra » Thu Sep 11, 2008 9:33 am

I have the feeling this season is weird, with Bertha and Ike especially, but also with Haïti being hit so many times, storms difficult to predict (even if the NHC forecasts are more accurate)... Sometimes we see 4 storms almost at the same time, then nothing. Am I wrong with this feeling?

It's hard to define a "wierd season", heck, define a "normal season".

But alot of unusual things have happened this season yes.

Preseason storm that developed almost overland from the remnants of the furthest east EPAC storm in history.

Longest lived July hurricane, cat 3.

A storm that hit florida 4 times after strengthening and developing an eye overland and stalling off-shore for several days flooding Melbourne out.

A category 4 entering the loop current that actually did not strengthen.

A storm that made an oblong counter clockwise loop killing hundreds in Haiti.

And a long lived storm that lost latitude on most of it's westward trek ending up as a very large, very disorganized, very potentially dangerous hurricane forecast to hit Galveston.

Yeah a little weird.
