? about 80lb propane tank in back of the house...........

#1 Postby bosag » Sun Jul 20, 2003 5:08 pm

Hello Again :D! We use propane for cooking only and just got this tank filled in May, it should last us for 8-10 mos. My question is how strong of a cane would it take to take it down? The propane co. told me that my roof would blow off first-which was reassurring but didnt put me at ease none the less. We are obviously not staying thru a major cane, but I can tolerate another Irene type storm. Any opinions? Thanx Again Barbara

Tank

Is the tank on your roof or in your yard? Are you in a storm surge zone? What is your home's elevation? If the tank is in your yard, then your house would proably blow away before the tank did. Of course, debris from hurricane-force winds or higher could blow into the tank and damage the valve assembly. But wind may not be the problem if you're close to the water where a storm surge could lift it up.

Generally, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have to evacuate, just close the valve.

Thanx for the reply, the tank sits on the ground, and yes I would assume we are in a storm surge zone(mandatory evac for cat-2 storm)-we are 3-4 miles due east from the Jupiter Inlet, with the loxahatchee river winding ever which way thru town,(we are not on the river) not sure of the elevation, probably 5-6 ft.
