That reminds me, are there any pictures out of the Isle of Youth to view?

Rene Preval, Haiti's president, has said that Hanna could be worse "than the storm that killed 2000 people in 2004".

Haiti faces a "catastrophe" after being hit by a series of storms in recent weeks, President Rene Preval has said.

Three storms in less than 21 days have killed more than 200 people, Haitian officials say.

A UN official says 600,000 people may need help because of flooding caused by Tropical Storm Hanna, which has caused the deaths of 136 people.

Mr Preval warned that Hanna could prove even more deadly than Hurricane Jeanne, which killed more than 3,000 in 2004.

I think Gustav and Hanna will be retired. Too early to tell of course. I am surprised that Gordon was not retired in 1994, when it killed over 1,100 people. That time there was a crisis.

I agree. Hanna is looking like a flooding disaster in Haiti. Latest I heard was 529 dead.

Yeah, I think the death toll could rise. Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 claimed at least 3,000 lives in Haiti alone.

Hanna won't be retired because Haiti is not part of the WMO which is why Gordon was not retired.

If Gordon happened the exact same way today, though, it would be retired, I'm sure.

Haiti's a member of the RAIV - Hurricane Committee. I don't know if it was in 1994, or maybe they didn't send delegates because of the coup.

I know there was a coup in 1994 in Haiti that time.

If that happens, and since Ike is on the fast track to retirement, it will be the first time ever that three consecutive names on the list are retired in one season...

I give Ike a very high 88% of being retired. That is pretty high...

Ike's a certainty to be retired due to the damage amounts, this will easily be a top 10 most damaging hurricane from the sounds of things and thats not to take into account the flooding that has been occuring in the central/eastern gulf and even south Florida and the Keys must have got some flooding damage.

It's pretty certain Ike will be retired (which was itself a replacement name for Isidore).

I'd say Dolly, Fay, Gustav, Hanna, and Ike all have means for retirement. So far, I'm only putting money on Gustav and Ike.

Is there any sense in retiring the names of storms? At this rate we're going to run out of names. These are acts of nature, not NFL jersey numbers. And the fact that they determine retirement on the death counts just sounds so wrong to me. It needs to stop, NHC can be spending the time debating retirement on how to make their forecasts better instead.

The NHC doesn't handle retirements. Get your facts right.

Well thanks for telling who does in fact deal with retirements, you're reply was very helpful.
