I'm not doubting you; I'm curious for more information. Where are you hearing this?

Im in Washington State - FOX and CNN both reported that a bit ago.

Have there been any recordings of sustained hurricane force winds today? I am aware of some gusts over 74 mph (including 90+ mph at Baton Rouge), but have yet to find any official reports of sustained winds at even CAT 1.
Anyone know of any?
Thanks!

In regards to that Levee Leak, an official stated that it "wasn't as bad as it looks" and there's not much of a concern, yet it's letting out more water than it should. Erm, eh?

Maybe HOU will get some much needed rainfall from Gustav.

If it hadn't been for Dolly and Edouard, we'd be in a severe drought now. Gustav may do its part. Tropics bringing damage and destruction from Lousiana eastward to Florida, and down on the Mexican border, but have actually been beneficial in SE Texas.

Will this go down as an official CAT 1 at landfall then? Assuming Grand Isle reports the highest sustained wind when all is said and done, that is.

As am I. Heh.

It's a strange sensation, sitting high and dry between two nearby feeder bands producing tornado warnings and tropical storm force gusts.

I think one of the problems with trying to verify sustained winds with a hurricane that hits an area with sparse populations is that any official weather observations tend to be knocked off line by the weather.

I bet in the end this will be rated cat-2 at landfall. There hasn't been any offical weather from Lafayette airport for over an hour, and the eye wall has approached during that time. For the previous 2 hours they had reported 43 sustained.

And that's hours after landfall.

Still doing fine in Lafayette. I guess we're still in for a few hours of strong winds.

Power continues to go on and off here, widespread outages across the city reported. Winds easily 80-90mph+ in gusts now and our local met think winds could be even stronger once the center crosses and the winds turn out of south. I'll try to check in later.

Lafayette in west eyewall. Baton Rogue still on hard side with core pulling off.

Busy day.

Doubtful, the coast of LA where it made landfall is all swamps and that is likely where the highest winds were. It will probably be a mid-high cat 2 at landfall.

River updates:

Jourdan River in Kiln has reached Moderate Stage, won't be surprised if it reaches Major Stage. Mississippi river in New Orleans actually went down a bit (tide?) to about 8.5 feet from 10.5. The Mississippi in Baton Rouge has skyrocketed to 13.69 feet. As I mentioned earlier today, Bayou Sara at Saraland is approaching Moderate Stage.

My power went out at 7:30 a.m., the wind and the squalls started blowing pretty good around 8:30 a.m., the worst of it seemed to come through here around 9:30 a.m., finally got my power back on at 11:30 a.m., the wind is still gusting pretty good at times but the rain for now has tapered off but I just checked radar and noticed a few more strong feeder bands to my east which will be moving through here pretty soon. Quite a bit of tree debris throughout my neighborhood but other than that not much else.
