Personally Id rarther spend a hundred million on getting the levees right than dealing with the social and political repercussions of a disasterl ike Katrina. but then again, Im not a Louisiana politician.
They did do that after Katrina... Kathleen Blanco, Mary Landrieu, David Vitter and a whole contingent of Louisiana officials went over there to find out if they could do something similar in Louisiana... they were told by the Fed. Gov't. that it was way too expensive of a project to take on...

Look at the radar guys....here in BR we are in the northern eyewall right now. Very nasty winds now. I'm about a mile from blue bayou (which is about 1.5 miles from the ascension parish line) where there was a reported tornado but I have not seen any indication of one. The trees are cracking behind my house. Looks like around 10 trees have been downed so far. Still surprisingly not all that bad but the winds sure are getting worse.

Here in Ascension parish my guess would be 55MPH and gust over 65. I have numerous tree tops knocked down with one of them in my garage.

the corps actally started construction on a gate system 40 years ago for Chef Pass and the Rigolets that would have stopped a surge from getting into Lake Pontchartrain. They opted on the "cheaper" interior levee system... i don't think it is cheaper now by a long shot. The USACE has been dragging it's feet on even pricing out the "cat 5" protection congress told them to report on... unfortunately, i think we have let environmetalist drive the bus, also. We can have gates and the environment, too!

Around 500,000 are without power in LA, phones and gas lines are still functional.

If you're getting very heavy tropical downpours it's going to be very difficult to see a tornado. Sometimes the amount of rain falling will obscure the funnel cloud...which can be a particularly dangerous situation.

heeere come the big winds.
I expect to lose power very soon. Ill report back as soon as possible (which could be tomorrow or several days unless our generator has enough power to run a computer)

I'm pretty fortunate here. I have a 7000watt generator. It's been going since 10:30. Got all my essential stuff going right now. Thank God for generators.

Governor of Louisiana reports scrap navy vessels have broken loose (unsure of the area). I believe this is related to the bridge issue mentioned earlier (tugs need to get through? My feed froze sporadically).

My step dad knows an electrician. They have it hooked up to where everything besides the A/C and washer and driers are not connected. We have one room with a window unit, so that'll be where we gather to sleep in the cool. The house has warmed up very quickly.
