Just saw on CNN live it is still being blown over at the Industrial Canal vs. overtopping imo. It is definitely very close to what I would term overtopping though. Only needs about another foot of rise in the surge in that area and it will become a bad problem. they were not showing the other location mentioned above.

Looking at it closer, they just reran it, I would call it overtopping, but it is not continual. They certainly do not need any more rise in the surge!!!!

Surge is quite impressive in Biloxi right now.. breached over the sea wall and filling up the east bound lane of HWY 90... (probably about 1.5 feet deep, winds must be gusting close to 60-70 mph.. ceiling fan blades just blown off the front porch.. I knew I forgot to do something.. like take them down... here's a pix of the surge at about 10:05 am .. sea wall is ~10.5 feet above sea level in front of my house.. pixs do not do this justice..

Hope nobody was standing outside down the road when they went flying.

MSNBC reporter onsite at the overtopping location says it looks like a waterfall - the water is just rushing over the top. He estimates it's about the length of seven rail cars.

Go to wwltv.com and look at it for yourself. And decide if it looks like a waterfall. Not to me, but I'm not in the business of sensational reporting.

And it sure looks like more than "gallons per hour". I don't see sensationalism from the reporters on this live feed. They're hoping the levee will hold but are worried about the rising water. Seems reasonable to me.

MSNBC just cut to local reporters who were talking about an area of the canal that they are not able to get on-camera where the water is actually rushing over the top and that that is "not good". They were showing the same part that the wwltv.com site was showing, but made a point to say that the part on camera was just splashing and not much of a concern. But this other part near a bridge was much more worrisome. They had moved from that area due to concerns about the stability of the bridge as it has "had problems" in the past and didn't seem safe.

Local news here says this overtopping was expected. They are not using the pumps yet and the situation is being monitored. Officials have said overtopping is a world better than a breach. We will see what the rest of the day holds ....

As far as Gustav still has to go before those winds calm down, I would think that soon those levees are definitely gonna be gushing over and not just splashing. There's not much left to go. I'm so glad all those people got out. 10,000 left... wishin em the best.

Much different than what some of these other posters are saying about complete overtopping and cracks in the levees? Local TV's have reporters live at the site and show nothing catastrophic going on. Go figure.

The reports of levee breeches (sp) on S2K during Katrina were much, much more accurate than the local stations. They were sounding the all clear mid morning during Kat. only to find out when they could get to the failure sites that water was pouring in.

not saying that is happening now at all but during katrina the first reports I heard about massive flooding were right here on S2K. don't discount the reports out of hand.

You can say what you want but I am watching them report live from the Port of New Orleans. Theres 6 to 8 feet of water there right now.
