Tropical weather outlook 11:00 PM EDT 7/14/03

Claudette is almost a hurricane with winds of 70 mph.Now it is moving west and landfall is expected at the centtral texas coast by tuesday evening. It will be a hurricane cat 1 but it has been a good thing that it has not a great deal of water to work with.It is a small system so those maximun winds wont cover a big area. The biggest threat will be the rain and it depends if it moves fast or slow the amount of rain in the area.Be safe and good luck those in the track of Claudette.

A tropical wave located eastnortheast of the leeward islands is moving WNW and has some potential for some development.

Elsewhere...Tropical storm formation is not expected thru wendsday.

Special update on Hurricane Claudette:

Claudette has made landfall at Matagorda near Port.O.Connor at noon CDT with maximun winds of 80 mph. From now on the hurricane will begin to weaken rapidly as it goes further inland. But the main threat will be the heavy rains in squalls and some tornadoes that may form in the area. From 4-8 inches can fall in portions of south Texas in comming days so be aware for that.Thankfully the system formed into a hurricane just before landfall because it was organizing just before that moment.
