I've seen it more than once in my 53 years on the Gulf coast. Not too many of them amount to major problems(of coure Alicia is an exception).

Humberto was also like this... it spooled from TD to Cat1 in less than 24 hours... and was only miles off shore of Galveston..

I think the MLC will work it's way down to the surface and thats where the LLC will form. Very close to the existing MLC.

My gut, this may hit closer to home, but in next week, for Caribbean and maybe Florida, 90L will be a much bigger story.

Not to wish bad luck on anyone, but it's nice to know this one's going somewhere else, and not coming here.

I think it's too early to declare that Mobile is in the clear. I mean it's only right off the AL coast as we speak.

If recon does go tomorrow they won't have far to fly. Most probably start aquiring data shortly after passing over the barrier islands....MGC

How close would it have to be for the recon not to go to 700 millibars but just climb to invest level?

Way OT, but when did Alabama win a National Championship in football this century?

I always cheer for LSU when they play almost anybody. Except, of course, Texas. I lived in Lafayette area, partied in BTR a total of about 3 years 1997-2000, with one nine month stretch back in Houston, between Baker Hughes, a layoff, and Halliburton. Listened a lot to the Eagle, home of Walters and Johnson, from BTR. LSU vs Texas National Title, I'd so cheer for Texas, but I'd love it and hope it was a close game.

Back on topic, cloud tops warming a tad, but still below -60ºC...

Latest Visible is showing convection firing right over the MLC or very close, much further east from the ball of convection that moved SW today. I'd say south of Destin at this point would be my guess.

ABNT20 KNHC 022352
TWOAT
TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
800 PM EDT SAT AUG 2 2008

FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...

A SURFACE TROUGH OF LOW PRESSURE ACCOMPANIED BY CLOUDINESS AND
SHOWERS IS LOCATED IN THE NORTH-CENTRAL GULF OF MEXICO. SURFACE
PRESSURES ARE FALLING IN THE AREA...AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
APPEAR TO BE FAVORABLE FOR SLOW DEVELOPMENT. THIS SYSTEM COULD
BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS AS IT
MOVES SLOWLY TO THE WEST OR WEST-SOUTHWEST. A RECONNAISSANCE PLANE
WILL INVESTIGATE THE AREA ON SUNDAY...IF NECESSARY.

SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE
LOCATED ABOUT 1025 MILES EAST OF THE NORTHERN LEEWARD ISLANDS HAVE
BECOME LESS ORGANIZED. HOWEVER...THIS SYSTEM STILL HAS THE
POTENTIAL TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION DURING THE NEXT DAY OR
TWO BEFORE IT ENCOUNTERS STRONG UPPER-LEVEL WINDS. THE LOW IS
FORECAST TO MOVE TOWARDS THE WEST OR WEST-NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 15 TO
20 MPH.

A SMALL AREA OF DISTURBED WEATHER ASSOCIATED WITH A TROPICAL WAVE
CENTERED ABOUT 500 MILES SOUTHWEST OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS HAS
BECOME LESS ORGANIZED. DEVELOPMENT...IF ANY...OF THIS SYSTEM IS
EXPECTED TO BE SLOW TO OCCUR AS THE WAVE MOVES WESTWARD AT 15 TO 20
MPH.

ELSEWHERE...TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.

you can see them starting to fire up here.

(OT) I'm thinking Alabama is 0-8 vs. the Horns all time

Alabama will have its share this century, one only has to look at the last century to see 12+ NC's and history usually repeats itself.

Whatever circulation there is must be at the mid-levels, because all coastal locations are still reporting onshore winds near sunset:

Hard to discern much from radar, as everything's getting quite far away....

Great. I want an antidote to the heat wave, but not something potentially destructive. Allsion was no fun.

I'll take a pop-up shower over something tropical anyday.

I don't see any closed low out there yet, still too early. but if the convection continues near that MLC overnight then tomorrow could be another story.
