Florida Wildfires, High Pressure and 2008 Hurricane season?

#1 Postby HouTXmetro » Tue May 13, 2008 11:17 am

Well this is my first post official post for the 2008 Hurricane Season. My favorite time of year. I have a question, I noticed Florida is battling wildfires. Has the Spring been particularly dry in Florida? I'm just wondering if the dry weather has been related to strong High Pressure and if that is a sign of things to come this summer.

We need to pray for a good soaking - the low daytime DP's are making a big difference, especially if the temps are high (as was the case last weekend, and, is forecast for this weekend - let's hope the NWS forecast is a bust)...

What year was the Pepsi 400 race on July 4th weekend postponed by wildfires? Maybe we can find a way to correlate wildfires and NASCAR to Florida tropical cyclone activity or lack thereof.

Longer ago than I thought...

Wildfires postpone Pepsi 400
NASCAR race reset for Oct. 17
By MIKE HARRIS
Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - History will have to wait.
With smoke from raging wildfires billowing within sight of Daytona International Speedway on Thursday, NASCAR postponed the Pepsi 400 even before crews could unload the race cars and equipment from their brightly colored tractor trailers.
The holiday race, which had been set for Saturday night, was to have been the first nationally televised during prime time on network TV. It will now be run Oct. 17.

4th of July in general was canceled a few years back for the fear that fireworks would ignite more fires.
