Hurricane names are replaced with names from the country that opted for retirement. For example, Hurricane Hugo devastated Puerto Rico, so it was replaced by Humberto. IT IS NOT REPLACED BY ANOTHER NAME FROM THE COUNTRY THAT THE NAME IS FROM UNLESS IT IS THE COUNTRY THAT OPTED FOR RETIREMENT!! :D :bday: :double: :flag:

I have been checking Google News and Wikipedia for WMO news about the retirement of the names but nothing up to now.

HurricaneRobert wrote:What is the threshold for retirement? I really don't see any consistency among the retirees. That's why I wish they would do away with the lists, because they are supposed to give names to historical events. Most, obviously are not, but it also confuses the public when they continue to use deadly or damaging names over and over. We've had two Allisons hit almost the exact same place. That's just incredibly stupid. This system is actually worse than naming them after the feast days of saints.

They should draw up a brand new list every year. 26 names from all 26 members.

From NOAA Public Affairs...
Whenever a hurricane has had a major impact, any country affected by the storm can request that the name of the hurricane be "retired" by agreement of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Retiring a name actually means that it cannot be reused for at least 10 years, to facilitate historic references, legal actions, insurance claim activities, etc. and avoid public confusion with another storm of the same name. If that happens, a like gender name is selected in English, Spanish or French for Atlantic Storms.

Which is why it might have been better to just wait for the official WMO announcement about all the retired names before saying anything.

some additional info, France was the country that requested Dean's retirement.

I missed the start of Dr. Avila's talk as I got back from lunch about 90 seconds too late, so he may have mentioned something about Felix and Noel

Nope, I saw Lix's whole talk. He only mentioned Dean being replaced by Dorian. He just mentioned that in passing when discussing Dean, Felix & Humberto. There was no focus on names to be retired and no one asked about other retired names.

Hurricane Dorian....that one already sounds like it could have a ring to it I don't like!

But it is five years away. Anything can, and undoubtedly will, happen between now and 2013, when Dorian pops up for the first time.

I am surprised Felix hasn't been retired. It killed way more people than Dean. France also retired Klaus even though it killed 12 people.
