That left wing looked like it was a few feet from touching the ground.

That pilot never should have attempted that landing

The A320 has a crosswind landing limit of 33 kts gusting 38 kts

According to the data at the time, the wind was 35kts, gusting 55 kts.

Between that satellite picture and the damage photos, almost looks like a land-cane, if such a thing existed.

With storm "Emma" there was a tornado outbreak in central and southern Germany. Since Saturday we get more than 20 cases with possible tornadoes. Some of them will be confirmend the next few days, at least two of them reach F2 with structural damage at some roofs.

The 35G55KT you mention was listed in the TEMPO group, which by WMO standards (if I'm not mistaken) means "this is intended to indicate significant changes of weather in the two hours after the observation is made. If the change is temporary then TEMPO is used followed by the predicted conditions."

Here's the raw metar from that report: EDDH 011220Z 29028G48KT 9000 -SHRA FEW011 BKN014 07/05 Q0984 TEMPO 29035G55KT 4000 SHRA BKN008

Basically, the 35G55KT is a forecast. The actual conditions was 28G48KT.

Now, here's the other aspect of it: 28G48KT was the wind speed. That doesn't mean it was the crosswind wind. The A320 was landing on RWY 23. Using that runway with this METAR (290°) and a magnetic variation of only 1°E, that yields a xwind component of 24G41KT.

Of course, with that said, yeah, the sustained xwind speed (24KT) was 9KT below the limit, but the xwind gusts of 41KT was still above...
