Hey Scorpion...i braved this cold and went to animal kingdom tonight. UDA/UCA rented a portion of the park out. That cold here goes just right thru to the bone. I can't get my legs and feet warmed up even after being back in the hotel room for the past 30 minutes.

Amazing temperature spread in just a few hundred miles....it is quite clear who is getting a moderating flow off of the ocean and who isn't!

also, note the latest winds at Miami Beach...sustained at 32mph and gusting to 40mph!!!

The cloud cover has contributed to the stable temperatures across south Florida, in addition to recent temperature inversion and the ENE onshore winds. There's a strong surface high over the area (http://www.opc.ncep.noaa.gov/UA/Mexico.gif).

Personally, what is your opinion as to why south Florida has experienced above average temperatures during recent winters? Obviously, the La Nina-esque SE ridge affected this winter via the borderline moderate/strong Nina, but 2006-2007 was above average during December-January despite a weak El Nino. Do you think climate change is playing a role? It's certainly warmer than the 1990s across the southern half of the state, especially along the east and west coasts.

I took a look at the max/min daily temperature records for Fort Lauderdale for Dec/Jan/Feb (links below, records all contain 100+ yrs of data)...

...and what the data shows is that nightime minimum temps have been extremely warm...disproportionately warm...since 1990. Out of the 91 days of records (Dec-31 days, Jan-31 days, Feb-29 Days, 31+31+29=91), there have been 71 Record High Minimum Temps in Fort Lauderdale since 1990 (23 in Dec, 24 both in Jan & Feb)!!!

In comparison, there have been 4 Record Low Min Temps during the same 91 days of records.

What is also interesting is that there haven't been nearly as many Record High Daily Max Temps...only 14 Record High Max Temps for the Dec-Jan-Feb period in Fort Lauderdale since 1990.

Warm, tropical nights suggest a stronger, or more prevelant, easterly flow, even during the winter. Also, with an easterly flow it is going to be harder to have a record high temp during the day in Fort Lauderdale (with ocean in the 70's)...which is supported by the data above.

Are we seeing cyclical patterns of location of high pressures in the winter...interesting to hear any thoughts from the experts on this.

Small branches down in the yard and a fairly decent limb that just missed
hubbys car.

Nix that.....the limb did hit his car. Scratch and dent at the top of the drivers door.

vigorous thunderstorm development has taken place just off the pasco/hernando county coast. individual cells seem to be headed north or northeast but it seems like this stuff is trying to build south. hopefully it does. I've got an almost july like lightshow off to my northwest. Pasco county has sure been a storm magnet lately. dizzyfish.... they could be gunning for ya again!

very impressive cell. it's clearly headed north of east so it looks it will miss pinellas completely but other less intense (but still heavy) cells are forming farther south so the sponge docks look to get a soaking eventually.

Jackpot! I just picked up almost an inch of rain inside of 20 minutes. a few rumbles of thunder but the wind was dead still through the whole event. still dumping at a good clip.

up over 2 inches now and still dumping heavily at times. with more activity approaching the coast a 3 inch tally appears possible. this is awesome and totally unexpected.

My college's gauge had .84" from last night.
