Teacher sleeps in classroom during storm

While all the students, and most of the faculty and staff are braving the harsh winter weather conditions, this teacher decided to stay behind and take temporary refuge at school.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) - Intimidated by snowy, slippery roads, a teacher cracked open a can of chili and slept in her classroom. Emma Clisante had a sleeping bag, pillow, toothbrush and fresh clothes Tuesday night at Ogden Preparatory Academy.

"I'm from the Dominican Republic, and when I see snow on the roads, it scares me to death," Clisante said.

If she isn't a skilled winter driver (a lot of people aren't, but many of them don't know it) then staying put and staying comfortable is the way to go.

That would ruin the fun of locking yourself in a classroom, hiding under a desk, and waking up every hour...after a night like that, was she actually able to teach the next day?!?!

Reminds me of the Children's Blizzard of 1888. See David Laskin's 2004 book.

The morning of the Great Plain's blizzard dawned mild with temperatures in the 30's. Mid-day the blizzard hit, temperatures fell 15-20 degrees in < 5 minutes and visibilities went to zero. Many teacher's had to decide whether to stay overnight in the classroom's with their kids in the cold or try to make it home.

Seems a little drastic to me. Next time her coworkers are going to leave with her their lesson plans, papers to grade and head for home! LOL Then again, if she wasn't used to snow and needs experience driving in it, then she's better off not fighting evening rush hour. That's not the time to learn how to drive in a snowstorm!
